Review: Fang & Metal. A Science Fiction Vampire Detective Novel by J.C. Andrijeski 5 of 5 stars

Fang & Metal. A Science Fiction Vampire Detective Novel (Vampire Detective Midnight Book 4)Fang & Metal. A Science Fiction Vampire Detective Novel by J.C. Andrijeski
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

NYPD homicide vampire detective Nick Tanaka finds himself in another dramatic story which turns into something both weird and personal. Weird as it starts with a crime scene where a sentient wall eats a guy and personal because one part of the ultimate aim of the whole situation is to kill all vampires and especially to kill him too. Add to that shady government agencies trying to cover things up and you have the perfect murder plot for Nick to solve. It all becomes much more urgent when it becomes obvious that race-purity fanatics want to dispose of all hybrids as part of starting another race war and that Nick's girlfriend Wynter James is firmly in the crosshairs.

Wow just wow. There were revelations from the past, promise for stories in the future and a complex situation as Nick struggled with everything that was thrown at him both mentally, emotionally and physically. Some parts were like a rollercoaster, some like an unfinished storyline that will be finalised in later books and so much drama I wondered if all the main characters would survive by the end of this book. Well written and easy to read, I loved this story which kept me captivated from the start to the finish. My only issue is how I am going to wait for the next book to be written!

Review: Weston by Dale Mayer 4 of 5 stars

Weston (The K9 Files #8)Weston by Dale Mayer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Weston Thurlow is at an impasse in life, so having heard about an unknown daughter he has who has been adopted to another family who then lost the father he takes a wag dogs mission to Alaska to kill two birds with one stone - see his daughter and find Shambhala the dog. Widower Danielle knows her daughter Sari needs a father so she has reached out to Weston to ensure that he meets her, but when the birth mother now insists she wants her back. Things get ugly when the dog investigation impacts his daughter Sari and Danielle - he needs to sort out what is going on before everything he has finally found is lost.

This was a dramatic story with many layers to dig through on both the emotional and factual side of things as Westom=navigated the missing dog, dead new owner and mystery of the mother of his child making demands. Somehow he needs to work out if it is all connected and how before it is too late for them all. Well written, easy to read and very enjoyable.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Review: The Witch's Consorts: The Complete Series by Eva Chase 5 of 5 stars

The Witch's Consorts: The Complete Series by Eva Chase

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

#1 Consort of Secrets 5*

Witches are brought up to know that they cannot have a consort from any family other than one that is in the witching community and that they should keep their powers secret from the ordinary people. Rose Hallowell has been compliant with everything her stepmother has demanded but she still misses her childhood friends. When she returns to her family's estate to prepare for her consort ceremony she ties up with her friends again as they have never forgotten her. As she starts to look into thins she realises that she has been lied to all along and betrayed by her family. Determined to claim her magic and control over her life again she is prepared to break every rule she is expected to follow.

Wow - I loved this story. It had so much drama, danger and intrigue that I was hooked from start to finish. I could feel myself reading faster and faster as I just HAD to know what happened next. I was completely behind Rose and gunning for her to get past the betrayals and find happiness with her guys. I really hope there is a next book in the series as it looks like building up to something much more dramatic and intense than this one (if that is possible).

#2 Consort of Thorns 5*

Rose Hallowell is determined to no longer be obedient - she's already broken all the rules to be happy and safe so how much worse can it be? However, her stepmother has put doubt in her mind as to whether she can trust the rest of those in her home. As the thorns close in can her unpractised magic and the love of her consorts be enough to guide them through?

Goodness - just when you think everything has been sorted out something else pops up to make life difficult again. There were plenty of twists and turns in the story and lots of surprises to make sure you had to pay attention to everything that was happening. Well written and easy to understand it was definitely a worthy continuation of the series. As for the twist at the end - wow - the next book cannot come fast enough as I really need to know what happens next.

#3 Consort of Pain 5*

Rose Hallowell has claimed her magic and has the 5 unsparked consorts she is not supposed to have and just hopes for a peaceful life. However everything is threatened by the Assembly – can Rose and her men escape them and find the kind of allies they need to have a safe, secure and peaceful future or will they forever be fighting? Can Rose find a balance of power where she doesn’t extract so much from her consorts that they become ill?

I loved this story - lots of twists, turns, excitement and drama. I liked the addition of more on the impact on her consorts and how they were coping with it. It was well written and everything was very clear and easy to read/understand. I could definitely feel their frustrations, despair and joy at different parts of the book. Definitely recommended.

#4 Consort of Fire 5*

Life is never simple for Rose Hallowell and her 5 consorts - for now, she might have hoped to be safe but the oath to keep her silence is not enough to stop her from trying to find ways to get around it so that the witching community can understand the treat to them and find ways to protect themselves too. So they somehow have to find a way to fight fire with fire although who gets burned is unclear.

Wow - so much danger, drama and excitement. It was great to see how Rose and the guys worked together using every means they had to both find ways to get around the oath as well as protect themselves and those they love. There were plenty of surprises and twists/turns as you would assume you knew how it would develop and then another event would happen and it would all change. Through it, all Rose tried to keep herself above the tricks that the opposition seemed to be prepared to stoop to. A great read that you will enjoy and want to read what comes next.

#5 Consort of Light 5*

In this last book of the series, Rose Hallowell and her consorts would be justified in thinking they deserve a quiet life, but first, they need to do what they can to stop forces that want to destroy the world - time for the inexperienced Rose to show them that she is more resourceful than anyone expects and will never give up. Can her consorts give any more of themselves and will they defeat the threat?

Wow - this was an explosive ending to the series. It was certainly even more dramatic than the previous books as everything worked towards a crescendo that left me both relieved and delighted at the end result. Everything had a great build-up which teased me and then surprised me with the way the result finally occurred. Well written, I really enjoyed it and was addicted to the point that I could NOT put it down until I knew the result of the current situation. I loved the little twists that would appear just when you thought you had worked out everything.

Mark of Damon 5*

In this novella at the end of the series we finish off some unfinished business as Rose and her Consorts settle into their normal lives and Damon resolves issues that have hung around since the battle with the demons in book 5 of the series.

This was a lovely surprise at the end of the series.  It was great to see Damon working through some of the unfinished business from the series and finally finding peace. A lovely surprise at the end which you will love. Well written and very easy to read, this was a great bonus at the end of the series.

Review: Smoke and Ritual by Melissa Sercia 5 of 5 stars

Smoke and Ritual (Beautiful Dark Beasts, #1)Smoke and Ritual by Melissa Sercia

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Covenless witch Arya Frost is an orphan and is protected inside the Sanctum, but her sleep is disturbed by cryptic voices that confuse her. As her powers that were hidden accelerate she gets revelations about her true lineage which is not what she thought. It appears that she is destined to become the Aether - a witch who can control all four elements - however, the various covens want her magic - a power she had no idea she had before embarking on this journey of self-discovery. When the sexy go Chaos shows up, Arya's place in the world is put at more risk. Somehow, Arya needs to awaken her own magic, resist her growing attraction to Chaos and somehow avoid being dragged into a magical feud that he's been around for centuries. The Blood Wae that she had been told took her parents might be over, but there is a war between witches that is only just beginning.

This was a great story that had the makings of an epic fantasy series. There were lots of feelings, dilemmas, danger, drama and battles as Arya struggled to find the truth and fulfil her destiny. Through it all, Chaos was there supporting her and giving her every chance to be successful. Well written, this was a very enjoyable story and I look forward to the next instalment in the series.

Review: Oh, My Roared by Milly Taiden 4 of 5 stars

Oh, My Roared Oh, My Roared by Milly Taiden
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Shifter Francesca Virgata wants a mate and so goes to Gerri Wilder for help. Shifters and best friends Theo and Marcus live together and separately go to Gerri Wilder for help to find a mate. In the past, they have shared everything but when they both meet and fall for Francesca at a meet and greet organised by Gerri, they settle into a friendly competition to see who can win her affections. Being distracted by trouble with aggressive behaviour in her pride, it's going to take some fairly dramatic events to help her decide between them. However, after a hot interlude, one evening and some thought Francesca realises that she loves them both and that they should work together to make the perfect triad. Surely a lion, tiger and bear work together perfectly well?

I loved this story which has lots of drama and danger in places as Francesca tried her best to sort ou what was going wrong in the pride and what the source of it was. It was heartbreaking for her to suspect her own brother as the centre of the rot in the pride even though he appears to have been a follower and not a leader in the end. Well written, it was easy to read and understand. Please note there is some sexual content in this book and some of it is MMF.

Review: All Kitten Aside by Milly Taiden 4 of 5 stars

All Kitten Aside (Paranormal Dating Agency, #11)All Kitten Aside by Milly Taiden

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Lion shifter Miranda Colilla (Andi) needs to find a mate fast before the lions in her pride drive her mad all thinking that she will just hand over the reins to them. It's not going to happen - she is determined to have someone who will not interfere and will let her lead in her own way. Wolf shifter Kasen Steel also needs a mate fast before his mother drives him insane with her insistence on the type of woman who is right for both him and the pack. Then in a chance encounter, Kasen intervenes when a group of male lions all gang up on Andi and she becomes all he can think about especially what he would like to do to her when naked. Kasen knows she is the perfect mate for him as much as she tries to deny it, and so keeping her alive becomes his new obsession (along with showing her they are meant to be together). Can they resolve the various problems that are trying to keep them apart and have their happily ever after?

This was a great story with several sub-plots of actions or events that were conspiring to keep them apart. I liked the way that each roadblock was cleared over time as they worked out a way to make a mating between a lioness and a wolf work out. Their dedication to each other at the end was really sweet and worth all the troubles earlier on in the story. Well written it was very enjoyable. Contains some explicit sexual content.

Review: Dragon Burning Bright by Michelle Fox 5 of 5 stars

Dragon Burning BrightDragon Burning Bright by Michelle Fox

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Adara Brenton's family has a genetic predisposition to spontaneous human combustion and she has recently started emitting fireballs - the latest one at her now ex-job so she now needs to find another job as well as find a way to control what is happening to her. Dragon Endre Felman has lived deep inside a mountain for centuries while adding to his hoard and looking for his mate. Meeting Adara before it is too late is a source of hope for him but he still has to convince her that dragons are real and that they are mates destined to be together. It is the only way to keep her alive as she goes through her own transformation but she is fighting him all the way as she refuses to feel and believe what he knows is true. In the end, they may both burn to ash because no dragon lives forever without love.

I loved this story which had the necessary elements of danger, suspense, drama and love all rolled together into a unique story focussed around Adara and Endre. I could definitely sympathise with Adara as she struggled to grasp a new concept that she had to understand and follow as quickly as possible as well as learn to trust and ultimately love a man she had only recently met. I could feel and empathise with them both as I read this book. Definitely recommended.

Dragon, Be Mine: Clan Saor-lĂ ithean (Dragon Guard Book 42)Dragon, Be Mine: Clan Saor-lĂ ithean by Julia Mills

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Ven finds himself on the Isle of Dagda where the weather is very changeable. He goes into a cave to shelter from the driving rain only for Izett to appear - she is White Winged Wolf that was created by Dagda's Lightning where it’s foretold that she will restore the balance of time, open the hidden portals, and guide the Magical world to their Eden. It turns out she is his fated mate and if he can persuade her that her mate doesn't have to be a wolf too and if they can both the defeat Demon God of Time and Space then they can have a future together! It seems that fate truly has used a curveball this time - can they use all their connections, skills and work together to have success?

This was a sweet story that had lots of drama and danger involved as the plot developed and we learnt more about them and their skills as they worked together to defeat Chronos. It was nice to pull in other dragon guards to take part in the battle and the way they all had to work together to the best of their strengths. Well written and very enjoyable. Contains some sexual content at the end of the story.

Review: Bearfoot and Pregnant by Milly Taiden 4 of 5 stars

Bearfoot and Pregnant (Paranormal Dating Agency, #10)Bearfoot and Pregnant by Milly Taiden

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When working for Gerri Wilder, curvy Cassandra Grimaldi is convinced her boss has lost her mind when she offers to prove to her that aliens are real and that multiple orgasms exist. Cassie just can't help but be curious - after all who would turn down that combination? Bear shifter Talen Arctos is upset - what is he to do when his mate leaves him after he has mated her? Now if only he could work out what to say and do in order to convince her to return with him. With his brother wreaking havoc in his clan and his pregnant mate thinking he's a one night stand, Talen really does have his work cut out for him. Just as well he is willing to do whatever it takes - even if he has to learn how to grovel!

This was a fun story that had the usual mixture of misunderstandings, plots, drama, danger and some real leaps of faith as they navigated the path to internal bliss. Well written, it was clear and easy to understand. Contains some explicit sexual content.

Tired of dating, Alivia Vela is beginning to think she is only going to be able to have a child through artificial insemination. Then very growly and drop-dead gorgeous Karel shows up and gives her a night she won't forget. That mouth…that tongue. Oh my. Jaguar shifter Karel Yaghar needs a mate fast but never expected to meet his perfect woman only moments after arriving on Earth. Now he just needs her to come with him to another planet - the question is will she agree or write him off as crazy? Then can Liv cope with the differences between the two planets - for example, the pink sea, let alone can she convince herself she isn't falling for him - especially as all her ovaries want is for him to be the daddy of her future baby! While she tries to figure that out, she and Karel will have to work together to take down an unexpected threat.

Review: Scaling Her Dragon by Milly Taiden 4 of 5 stars

Scaling Her Dragon Scaling Her Dragon by Milly Taiden
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rebecca is on a trip to another world to visit her sister Charlotte who has settled there. She initially had hoped to find herself another shifter like her sister who was loving and sweet, but instead, she is attracted to a big fiery dragon who is insistent he is not looking for love but could melt her panties off with his sexy body. Dragon Vikter Dragos is dying unless he can find his mate and although he is trying desperately to fight his attraction to sassy and curvy Rebecca he cannot stay away from her. If only she were his mate life would have been perfect - instead, he is losing control and contact with his dragon. Becca is just confused - one minute he is kissing her like the world is going to end, the next he is cold and distant - doing his best to drive her away. However, when competition for her appears, he needs to get his feelings under control and understand what is happening before he loses her forever!

I found this story confusing. On the one side, it was a really sweet story of an attraction between Becca and Viktor, and on the other, he was so annoying I was almost at the point of giving up reading the story. However, I am glad I stuck with it as I would have missed all the drama and excitement of the rival for Becca's attention and the effect it had on Viktor. Contains explicit sexual content.

There's Snow Escape (Paranormal Dating Agency, #7)There's Snow Escape by Milly Taiden

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Charlotte Marzan has been invited to another planet - one containing shifters - in order to attend her best friend's wedding to a real-life lion king. She may be curvy but there are two really hot guys looking at her as if they have not eaten in years and she is the ideal food. She really shouldn't be interested, but she is there to have fun! Wolf shifters Brecc and Eros need to find a single mate to share before the pack elders impose one on them. In desperation they ask PDA's Gerri Wilder to find them one - after all, she seems to always be able to deliver outspoken, curvy and incredibly sexy women from Earth and that is Charlotte - they just need to find a way to get her to stay forever - should be simple surely? Can Charlotte work out why Brecc is so distant and get him to open up and why there is so much drama with the neighbouring group of dragon shifters? Will Charlotte be able to growly loud enough to be heard after all when two wolves chose a mate there is no escape?

This was a great story that had lots of drama, tension, stubbornness and determination between the three of them. Thank goodness she was so determined that she was able to get them to see sense. Well written, it was a very enjoyable read. Contains explicit sexual content.

Review: The Alion King by Milly Taiden 5 of 5 stars

The Alion King (Paranormal Dating Agency, #6)The Alion King by Milly Taiden

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Isabella Barca (Bella) is a great organiser but not so great at staying out of trouble, so she takes on the role of Gerri Wilder's assistant and finds the trip of a lifetime on offer as she travels with Gerri to a shifter planet to help find the king a mate. Lion shifter king Wilder's assistant does not apologise does not purr and has not asked for help. However, when Gerri arrives and he meets Bella, he finds himself doing everything apart from purring. With wolves stirring all kinds of trouble for them and a cousin who would like to shred Bella to ribbons, things are not simple for the couple. Not at all. One thing's for sure, when his mate is taken and threatened, the entire planet will hear the lion king's roar

I really loved this story which was a really nice mixture of a macho shifter, a woman doing her best to come to terms with another way of doing things, and a lion who will change as much as he needs in order to please the woman he loves. There was plenty of drama, suspense and danger as the story unfolded. Well written, it was easy to understand and feel everything as they were going through events. Contains explicit sexual content.

Review: Accidental Activist: Justice for the Groveland Four by Josh Venkataraman by Barbara Venkataraman 4 of 5 stars

Accidental Activist: Justice for the Groveland FourAccidental Activist: Justice for the Groveland Four by Josh Venkataraman by

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a journey through the quest to get justice for The Groveland Four and in return, it will give great suggestions on how to champion another cause that is dear to your heart. By reading this, you will discover the details behind a shady past from Florida in the US and how even now you can change the future to not make the same mistakes. Obviously, it will not always go to plan for the author, but his determination will be clearly visible as he struggles to make this a successful quest for restitution for the sins of the past. A very interesting read that will if nothing else educate the reader on some of the murky histories of one part of the United States.

This was not normally the kind of book that I would read, but as I got further into the story I felt myself become invested into the injustice of the events described and knowing that justice really had to be done if today we had any sense of pride. This book is written to describe the story as events happened which avoids the style of writing we find so popular now where the story is told in a few pages. Well written it was easy to understand and feel the frustration and hope that the author was experiencing. Definitely worth a try even if it is not your normal style of book.
