This is a collection of 17 science fiction short stories. Each story is original in concept, full of clear and full descriptions of the characters, settings and events that happen, and each has its own unique twist at the end that will make you think "Hmm" at the end. I particularly enjoyed Mother, The Scorched Garden and The Special Friend (although I loved them all at some level. Definitely recommended.

Amidst Alien Stars {Milijun Book 2} by Clayton Graham

Laura Sinclair and her son Jason, plus a group of desperate humans abducted from Earth in the previous book awake among the alien stars somewhere else where they are trying to forge a new future both for themselves but also for those back home on Earth. However, they are not with the one alien race and so have to solve the riddle of the group of races they are encountering and try not to become embroiled in their historic conflict that seems to be as valid now as it was many years before. The problem is who should they trust (if anyone) and what is the real plan for the hybrid children that have been brought into existence? Add to that there is a constant worry in the back of their minds - will they ever see Earth again and get home?

This is once again a complex story with many layers for you to dig through as you read this second book in the series - although you could get away with not reading the first one I really do think you need to read the first one to make sense of the events in this book as early as you can. I enjoyed the way they were sometimes working independently but were always working towards a common goal that would make sense of what was happening to them all. I enjoyed the mini-stories within stories that were very enjoyable. Well written it was very clear and easy to understand.

Scientists from Paludis share a technological breakthrough with the Earth authorities the planet becomes a battlefield which is quickly escalating. Plus there is local aliens with their own agenda and a secret human cult is also planning to exploit the technology. Suddenly the planet becomes a battlefield. Stefan Lattanzis is a police agent and he needs to team up with a botanist and a seer in order through trust to stop the parties ripping space and time apart.

There was some serious world building in this story which painted a detailed picture of the places, characters, situations and emotions involved in this complex tale of worlds, technology and human nature. It was a salutary tale of what greed can do to people and the extent their behaviour will either sink low or become something of legend. I think so many of the themes in this story have equivalents in today's world and is like the modern science fiction version of a morality tale. It was very well written and enjoyable.

This is a really nice collection of stories by the author that are a great introduction to his work. In it you will find excepts from his first book Milijun and his upcoming book Saving Paludis. Then there are some really clever short stories which are perfect for a quick read, cover various genres but are perfect as a way to get to know his style. I really enjoyed "Silently in the night" which I thought was very clever and it has a great twist at the end.

Set in Australia in 2179 Laura Sinclair and her son Jason see aliens arrive on earth. The aliens try to connect to humans in a symbiotic way and Jason is chosen by them to contribute genetics in an experiment to prove the spiritual compatibility between them and humans by impregnating human females with embryos that are hybrids of the alien race and Jason. Laura ends up arguing with Major General Sebastian Ord from the Australian Defence Force and Uriel who is head of a strange research facility called Milijun in the outback. Following some fights Jason is then abducted the aliens which pushes Laura to the limits of her sanity (or so it feels at times). Somehow she has to be able to save herself, Jason and a group of women with unborn children from both humans and aliens.

I loved the basic story of the aliens coming to earth and doing their experiment. The research facility was a nice addition and made the story pleasantly different to similar stories in the genre. There was a good level of detail and the technical side of things was definitely well covered. I found the character of Laura more than a little annoying which may have just been me but her dilemmas and thoughts/hesitancy just felt too much after the first few times.
