Review: Silent Hero by Andrew Grey 4 of 5 stars

Silent Hero

Silent Hero by Andrew Grey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Army veteran Harmon Wheeler loses his voice after a life‑changing injury and retreats into books and the quiet kindness of librarian Derek Willow. Derek sees past Harm’s intimidating exterior, and an ASL class brings them closer. As their relationship grows through notes, texts, and sign language, Derek’s stalker becomes a real threat — and Harm must rely on his combat skills to protect him without pushing him away.

Generally, I loved this story — the gentle, book‑loving Harm, a disabled army veteran, and Derek, the librarian who sees straight through his intimidating exterior, made a wonderful pair. Their relationship grew through ASL classes at the library and the sense of community those classes created, which was one of my favourite parts of the book. I did struggle with a couple of things, though. Derek’s resistance to using legal avenues to deal with his stalker felt frustrating, especially given the danger. And Harm’s lack of communication skills was surprising — I expected he’d have tried to learn ASL on his own through books or online resources long before now. Still, their connection was sweet, and I loved Harm stepping up to protect Derek using the skills he learned in the military. An enjoyable story with emotions and feelings throughout, even if they were a little muted at times. This was an MM story with mature content.
