Review: Finding Love by Maggie Mundy 4 of 5 stars

Finding Love Finding Love by Maggie Mundy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When Evie lost her husband the rest of the Connor Clan of Portland Oregon rallied around her as part of looking after one of their own. On her own still 10 years later, she has continued to provide for herself and her daughter. Luke is on the run from someone bad in order to protect his sister. He always intended to move from place to place and not get attached to anyone nor anything. However, when he meets Evie and her daughter Matilda, both sides appear to have woven their way into each other's hearts. However when the past catches up with him all could be lost - can he save his sister and Evie before its too late?

This was a sweet love story which definitely tugs at the heartstrings as the story developed. I loved the detail around the characters in this story and the way that their interaction changed as it was progressing. It was full of drama and danger that definitely got under your skin and made me start to read faster just to know what happened next. Well written and a very enjoyable read.

Review: Dax: A Wolf's Hunger by Bella Roccaforte 4 of 5 stars

Dax: A Wolf's Hunger Dax: A Wolf's Hunger by Bella Roccaforte
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Kallus' attack and almost decimated the Crazy Peak Pack and when Dax returns everyone was looking to him to take over as Alpha and save whatever is left, but The Hunger strikes him and his only thought is to find his soul mate who is out there somewhere. Can he find her and pull himself together before the pack is destroyed? Katie is dragged from Palm Beach and her comfortable life as a wedding planner to the mountains to sort out her best friend's wedding. However, an ugly bride's maid dress is not what she ends up with when she encounters both her soul mate and an evil force that is determined to destroy her. Can Katie and Dax find each other and take the roles they are destined for or will the New Templars succeed in their mission to rid the world of all magic?

This was a lovely story that had a great mixture of danger, drama, magic and passion. I loved the different relationships between the packs and how the crisis ensured they had to abandon the prejudices that were held by some of them for each other. I loved the way the story ended and it was great to see how three strong women achieved a great deal even when the chips were down. Well written and everything was easy to understand and feel. Loved the HEA at the end.

The Prescient The Prescient by J.C. Andrijeski
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Vampire detective Nick associates with a few seers currently in his life including one who might come across as antisocial but has a talent for painting things before they happen (even though he only knows to paint it and not what it means). The latest one is of a bomb doing off in downtown New York however by the time Nick sees it, it is too late. With no leads apart from the painting, a murdered human who is the partner of eccentric vampire Straven (star designer and architect) he has little to go on. Soon it is apparent that a robbery gone wrong is not the right conclusion to make as it is something far more sinister with very far-reaching consequences. As part of the investigation, Nick will have to go too close to a life he thought he had left behind and he will see his ex-girlfriend with a new vampire boyfriend in a hip vampire club which sends Nick almost over the edge. Can Nick solve the case, work things out with Wynter and survive all the obstacles thrown at him?

OMG - so many surprises and intrigue for the future. I won't put any spoilers in here, but I'm relieved how some of this story went although there are some worries for the future there too. Keeping my fingers crossed for the characters in the future. I loved the detailed way that elements of the story were slowly peeled back (like layers in an onion) and the relationships that built for the future between Nick and the humans he works with within the police. I loved what happened between Nick and Wynter (sorry can't say more). Well written and very easy to understand and feel, I'm wondering what is going to happen next in this very detailed world in the mind of the author. I just know it's going to be great.

Dragon in Denial: Bad Alpha Dads Dragon in Denial: Bad Alpha Dads by Tami Lund
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Dragon Ketu Ormarr skipped his hometown 10 years ago after his sister was killed by drug addiction. Now he is back with a mission from his new leader - to take down the drug trade that is plaguing the dragon colony for years. However, having re-established contact with his late sister's best friend Antoinette Dupré more items have been added to his to-do list - avenge his sister's death and protect Antoinette and her son (while trying not to fall in love with her). Simple surely?

I loved this story which had a great mixture of drama, danger and love. I liked the reversal of roles at the end and that the mates eventually came to their senses and did what was necessary. Well written and easy to understand, this was a good dragon shifter story.

Night Walker Night Walker by Lisa Kessler
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

250 years ago Calisto Terana lost everything when the woman he loved was brutally murdered by a zealous priest. So he decides to take the opportunity to try and find her in subsequent life and love her again by agreeing to take immortality as a Night Walker. Kate Bradley has been haunted by dreams of her own death. Her life takes a turn for the worse just weeks before her wedding when she catches her fiance with another woman and so returns to San Diego to clear what happened from her head. Determined to steer clear of men the last thing she needs is to meet Calisto and be drawn to him to the point of obsession. Calisto has no doubt Kate is the reincarnation of his lost love but the Fraternidad Del Fuego Santo has been watching him and the latest watcher has his own dark ambitions that do not match those of the fraternity and is determined to use Kate to get what he wants from Calisto - can he lose her again??

I enjoyed this story which was inventive and an interesting concept. It was easy to get involved in the characters personalities, their thoughts and emotions. It was a pleasant read. I did struggle in my mind to classify this story - is it fantasy, PNR, Horror? I think it's a mixture of all three. Part of that is clever and part of it is not as I don't feel it fully satisfied anyone who is into any one of those genres. This book includes some sex, some brutality and some romance.

Queen of Dragons Queen of Dragons by Melody Rose
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Eva makes a wish in a well with a penny and wakes up in a world containing magic and dragons. She has a choice - use her magic to cleanse the corruption poisoning the land, help cure a friends mother, clash with a king and tell him some home truths knowing he needs you much more than she needs him, fall in love with two guys who are polar opposites in temperament, or maybe all of these options? Oh and she appears to be the queen of the dragons too.

This was a great dragon story based in a well developed and described a world where both good and evil existed It was great to watch her development as she grew up some more and learnt a host of life lessons. I loved the relationship between Eva and her dragon Monte too. Well written and easy to understand I am looking forward to the next story in this series and finding out what happens next to this new queen and her friends. A great read.

Review: Denton by Dale Mayer: 4 of 5 stars

Denton Denton by Dale Mayer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

SEAL Denton Hamilton is at Hathaway House hoping to emulate some of the success that hid friends Brock and Cole had there. He is missing some ribs, muscles a portion of his stomach plus PTSD and is prepared to work hard to repay the kindness of the person who sponsored his stay there. Just fixing his physical side of things would be enough for him as he is not convinced he can fix the mental side of things and certainly not find his perfect woman as his friends already have - after all, who would take him on as he is? Hannah Forsythe is an admin assistant at the centre and is a loner at heart. However, she feels drawn to Denton and his struggle and finds it very sad that he feels no one could love nor want him. She tries to help him but it backfires when one of her comments has consequences she never predicted and she withdraws from him so he can work his way through the thoughts and feelings it inspires; Can he work through them and could they have a happy ending or will it all go wrong?

This was a lovely story that can get a bit deep in places as it analyses thoughts and feelings in some detail. However, if you stick with it you will be rewarded with a very sweet love story that has the kind of promise for a lasting relationship that has all of the tools for a long and happy life together. Well written and very enjoyable.

Review: Horrid Charms by Eva Chase 5 of 5 stars

Horrid Charms Horrid Charms by Eva Chase
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Rory's enemies are multiplying which is just what she does NOT need considering the accusation handing over her head right now. Clearing her name (plus keeping her freedom), as well as her position in the magic world, is going to take trusting people she never would have foreseen nor wanted to turn to. Can she at least count on the other scions when they find out just how close to home the true villains are?

OMG poor Rory - her life is just a procession of bad events after bad events (with some bits of pleasure dotted in among them). Just when you hope she is over the worst another blow appears to set her back again. This is an epic story which is also a slow burn reverse harem, but as we get further into the series the players (and battle lines) are becoming more set and understood. Well written and very enjoyable, it helps to have read the earlier books in the series in order to understand what is happening. Contains some sex. Definitely recommended.

Lake Of Sins Series Box Set: Books 1-3 Lake Of Sins Series Box Set: Books 1-3 by L.S. O'Dea
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A great value set of the first three books in this original series.

Escape - 4*

On Earth in the future all animals over a weight of 20 pounds are extinct and humans are not completely human. The population are segregated by class and the lowest class (a Producer) has the job of producing food for all of the other classes with the ultimate being making something called the Harvest List. Producer Trinity knows she won't be chosen to stay and breed as she has some hidden differences to the others due to being a mixed breed - namely claws, fangs and the ability to see in the dark - something she has had to hide her whole life. She is determined to find out where the teenagers who don't make the list go before they come for her and so in the last week before she is taken decides to have one more try to find out what happens by sneaking into the woods. She discovers the horrifying fate that awaits - and so vows to try and return to the camp to try and save everyone else.

I loved the concept of this story and the way the different classes mirrored in many ways real life. I could definitely feel her horror when she discovered the fate of those that were taken away from the camp and understand why she was so compelled to go and try to save the others (even though they had mostly ignored her). It seems that it also mirrored real life in the way that there were some who were profiting from others misery and I only hope that we experience more of those characters and hope that they receive some kind of just deserts for the behaviour towards some of the others. Well written it was well described and I could imagine the world at the way that the characters in the story lived. Looking forward to knowing what happens next - there are some folks can hopefully get some kind of punishment in the future.

Secrets in blood - 4*

Trinity had a plan but it's all gone wrong and now she needs to flee to save herself. Almighty Hugh Truent having learnt of Trinity's parentage is determined to study her and make the discovery of a lifetime - however, there are others who would kill her to hide the truth. The combination of Trinity's struggle to survive and Hugh'd determination will lead to a collision between the classes that could shatter the very foundation of their world as they know it. How will it all end up?

I enjoyed this story with took the story of Trinity and the other classes in their society further. There was plenty of drama, excitement, danger, betrayal and even tragedy. I could definitely feel some of the emotions involved in some of the events in this book - especially the celebration dinner which showed what happens if you are not careful and check things carefully. Wondering how the story is going to develop further and what will happen next.

Hangman's Army - 4*

Hugh Truent is in prison just days from his execution after talking about the genetic similarities between the classes after the evidence vanished and he was arrested for treason. To protect his family and everyone else he cares for he has ct off all ties with anyone outside of the prison and therefore he no idea that the reports were leaked and civil war is on the horizon. Trinity and her friends know they have no hope of winning the war that is on the way unless the classes can be united, and in order to achieve that they need Hugh. So they aim to break him out of the maximum-security prison so h can lead their army - however, this is not going to make someone happy as he is only focussed on revenge and not on leading a war. Can Mouthy (but attractive) Trinity persuade Hugh to help them by leading the rebel forces in order to win the war?

I really enjoyed this story which focussed for a large amount of time on the relationship between Hugh and Trinity. The number of deals and compromises that were needed by the characters was interesting and it was very dramatic at times. I loved the way the story is heading and can't wait to find out what happens next. Well written and very enjoyable, it helps to read the previous books but I feel you could get away with it as a stand-alone story - however, the box set of the first 3 books in the series would be a great introduction to the story.

Review: Blood King by Amber K. Bryant 3 of 5 stars

Blood King Blood King by Amber K. Bryant
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Sybille Esmond has inherited her family's business and summons the spirits of the undead and guides them to the afterlife. She never wanted to but it pays the bills although there are huge risks including becoming undead. Elis Tanner is undead and trying to be reformed although he does bring along a possessive ex-wife which increases the risks for Sybille as she helps him to confront his jealous ex-wife as well as try to investigate the Blood King who refuses to die by stake or poison. As part of this Sibille is harrowingly possessed which leaves her burned and bruised she finds herself drawing closer to Elis who may be the only one capable of helping her to kill the Blood King although more is in jeopardy as the minions and the King close in. Can Sibille survive this and will the Blood King be defeated?

I really wanted to like this story as the outline looked really interesting, however, I did find it hard to read and it was difficult to keep track of the plot as the author expanded the events that were happening. There was a lot of what I consider to be background information and a little bit too much detail on Elis and his ex-wife (and their unorthodox meeting). I did manage to get back into it so maybe it is like 2 books joined together - one about Elis and his life with his wife, and another about Elis working with Sibille to find out more about the Blood King and tackle the ex-wife. It was enjoyable just don't expect to be blown away.

Count The Rain Count The Rain by Kathryn Lee Martin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rags is 16 and a professional outlaw. Following the death of Hyperion and with the salvation of the Kingdom in progress she finds new freedom unexpected. A ghost from the past called Antiquity surfaces in the form of an assassin targeting her and the new leader Henrick Oreson. She is forced to flee her family (again) and goes to Zephyr in order to protect them and then the upcoming council meeting she has a choice - go to the front lines and fight or let the Kingdom fall. Can Rags work with Henrick and second in command Colton Caelan Fieldson and make the right choices to cripple Antiquity and save the Kingdom?

This is a very detailed saga that needs you to read the earlier books in the series in order to fully understand the story and characters involved in it. I'm not sure I fully understood some of the implications of the events in the story nor the relationships between the characters although I did get a sense of them. It was a generally enjoyable story and I could understand what was happening although not necessarily why. If you have read the other books this would be a very enjoyable story.

Review: Nelson by Dale Mayer 5 of 5 stars

Nelson Nelson by Dale Mayer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When Nelson has an early morning meeting with Elizabeth Etchings he receives bad news - an old friend of his (and her brother) has gone missing from his ship when it was docked in Ensenada. So Nelson finds that both himself and his friend/colleague Taylor are sent with 4 days to find out what has happened to him. However, when they get there it becomes apparent that Elizabeth is not going to sit back and wait but has come to search too - she might be in danger but her brother is the only family she has left. Nelson soon realises he needs to protect Elizabeth as she has caught the eye of someone who rules the area and so she is now in danger. When the issues merge everything goes south and the danger level is totally off the scale - can they all come out of this alive?

This was a lovely story with so much danger and drama it was refreshingly different from the normal pattern of the books in this series. I really enjoyed the way Elizabeth thought she was capable but was actually bumbling from one situation to another with the SEALs doing there best to keep her alive. I also enjoyed the twist with the fact that not everyone in the navy was honourable and that good could conquer evil even if it was very difficult to get there. Nelson and Elizabeth were a great match as she pushed him out of his comfort one all of the time. Well written and very enjoyable.

Review: The Descendants: Rise of the Reaper Army by Nikki Lee Taylor 5 of 5 stars

The Descendants: Rise of the Reaper Army The Descendants: Rise of the Reaper Army by Nikki Lee Taylor
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Former Army Captain Gabriel Stone knows something is wrong when the earth and wind don't feel right plus the apex predators start acting strange. So when he is attacked by a vampire he convinces himself that life is over and feels he has no alternative than to live alone in an old forest cabin while he tries to find and kill the creature who changed him. While hunting he ends up at an old farmhouse where he meets the fiery, beautiful and headstrong Aurora. He then realises that nothing is as it seems as she is what is known as a Descendant (the daughter of a vampire father and Amazon warrior mother) so has lots of strength and also has a special connection to the earth and its creatures. Auror has spent her life looking for the creatures who killed her parents and she realises that Gabriel is the key to destroying them. Can they survive and find and defeat the dark forces that threaten the planet that we all call home?

This is a lovely paranormal story that has a foundation of the classic good versus evil but also covers the environment and the impacts that humans have had to the natural world around us. A little bit moralistic at the end but still this is a great story that was very enjoyable. It was well written and everything was easy to understand and relate back to real life. The Reapers were suitably evil and demonic and I did enjoy the twisting around of the vampires being good guys for a change.

Hopelessy Hellbound Hopelessly Hellbound by Cassandra Lawson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ares is the God of War for thousands of years, but he also knows when to accept defeat and having pursued witch Bryn Rathmore for months he decides to leave her alone. However, when Bryn turns up unannounced at his door asking for help he just can't turn her away (even if it tests his self-control to the max). After all, it gives him the advantage to wage a war of attrition to gain her surrender (although it might need his own too). Can he win this war and can he help Bryn to victory over her own battles?

This was a powerful love story that showed the lengths Ares would go to to get his perfect woman. There was a great deal of drama and danger for them both but together and through trust with the other they succeeded (and Ares got his witch too). This tied together a lot of threads that had been in the background of a number of the stories in this series and it was a great result for there to be such a satisfactory ending for Ares and Bryn. Well written it was immensely enjoyable I just wished it didn't signal the closing chapter in the series - there were definitely some stories there left to tell. If you haven't read any of the series please go and start it and you will love all the amazing stories around all the Gods, witches and demons.

SEALs of Honor SEALs of Honor Books 11-13 by Dale Mayer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Great value collection of SEAL stories

Brett - 4*

Elite SEAL Brett is sent to rescue hostages from a yacht but when he discovers one of the hostages is now single ex-girlfriend Ceci and her kids it becomes much more personal. Ceci had walked away from Brett trying to find a way to heal but ended up a widow raising two kids. The master plan for life was to stay single and avoid the pain that relationships often come with but when she sees Brett she realises she was fooling herself. When safe suddenly becomes dangerous she realises she might not get a chance to correct her mistake - will everyone stay safe and can Ceci fix things?

This was a sweet story of the pain that can come with relationships and how communication is key. Add to that danger, determined killers and a hot SEAL and you get a recipe for lots of emotions, soul-searching and passion. The story was fairly believable and easy to get into so that you needed to know what was going to happen next. Well written and very enjoyable.

Devlin - 4*

Devlin is in Afghanistan helping to train the Afghan soldiers and is doing some additional training on the latest drones but when a murder is committed on the base and suspicion is thrown on the drone's designer he can't stop himself from helping her. When they return Stateside another company employee is murdered and again the designer is accused of committing it. Thing is Bristol never wanted to take time off her schedule to take the latest models to Afghanistan she finds herself without her notes, her best friend and now is being unfairly accused. Can Devlin keep Bristol alive, her business alive and her reputation intact?

This was a sweet story showing how the SEAL family pull together to help each other (and those they love) to thwart the bad guys and let the truth speak for itself. I loved the way the relationship between Devlin and Bristol built up to something far more meaningful. Well written and very enjoyable, this had a lovely HEA at the end.

Easton - 4*

Easton is looking forward to this trip to the Canadian wilderness for joint military training, but when he meets photographer Summer taking photos for the new marketing materials on the trip, it takes on a new twist. Summer knows she gets so taken with the art of what she is doing she can be seen as forgetful, but she loves to travel and can take care of herself if she needs to. So when she is stalked and is attacked, Easton realises she needs help from him to stay alive which gets much worse as the violence escalates and he comes close to losing a woman he can't stay away from. Can Easton keep her alive and can Summer get fully under his defences?

Goodness Easton fought the attraction all the way even though it was obvious how he felt (if only he could admit it to himself). I think Summer would infuriate me to the point of screaming at times, although I'm sure everyone knows of someone like her in life. Well written and very enjoyable, it was great to see a woman keep one of the SEALs completely confused. I'm just SO glad he came to his sense at the end!

A Rose by Any Other Name: Paranormal Dating Agency A Rose by Any Other Name: Paranormal Dating Agency by Mandy Rosko
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Racoon shifter Rita is impressive but she is unable to find her fated mate that that is making her sad so she contacts Gerri Wilder asking for help, but is told to wait until the time is right (whatever that means). So when she receives a message from Gerri she can only assume she took up her offer of services in return for help. What she expected was to steal something of value for Gerri, but what she encounters is a half-man, half-cyborg who is very sexy and just her type!

This is a good story along the Paranormal Dating Agency lines but with a very different twist when it comes to the race of those involved. There as a lot of drama and action as she did everything she could to rescue the man she encountered. It did end a little abruptly and it did feel a little more like a novella than a full-length novel. I definitely want to find out what happens next to this couple that could have a great future ahead of them (if they can survive all that is being thrown at them). Very enjoyable.

Footprints in the Ferns Footprints in the Ferns by Dale Mayer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Doreen's house is empty as the valuable antiques have all been removed and so she has time on her hands. So when her friend (and love interest?) Corporal Mack Moreau is busy with a new investigation which has a similarity via mysterious footprints under the bedroom window to a 10-year-old case of a missing 8-year-old girl called Crystal, she decides it won't hurt to use some of the time she has on her hands (and to avoid heavy work in her own garden) to have a quick look (even though Mack has already warned her off). of course she won't have to struggle on her own as she has the help of Thaddeus the parrot, Goliath the Maine Coon, and Mugs the Basset hound. What she finds are a world of pawnshops blackmail and hidden emotions. So it's not really her fault surely when her case merges with the one Mack is working on. Can Doreen solve this latest mystery?

This was a lovely mystery which you find yourself solving as you read through the story and find the clues. It seems that where Doreen now lives is a bed of old police cases just waiting for her to come along and solve. It makes me wonder if it is the same in order places or did her Gran deliberately live somewhere with so much hidden crime? Well written and very addictive, I was dying to know the outcome while also feeling sad that another of these stories was coming to the end. I can't wait to find out what happens in the next story and just hope that Mack and Doreen manage to get to something more romantic (and permanent). Highly recommended.

Dani Summerland has just turned the corner in her life when she is suddenly propelled into the future while holding in her arms her orange Persian cat, Charmin Marvin. Levi Blackburn tries to rein back his younger brother Milo in order to not break the strict government regulations but unknown to him Milo has been working on a secret project to get him a surprise present - Dani - who is a woman from the past that Levi has been fixated on for as long as he can remember. What he never anticipated was that she would arrive with a snarky talking cat. Can Dani adapt to the future and will Levi forgive Milo for this deliberate breaking of the strict rules?

This is a sweet novella that was a pleasant read. I'm hoping there is more detail about some of the restrictions in the future as the series progresses. Reasonably well written it was easy to understand and follow what was happening. An enjoyable introduction to the series.
