Review: Broken Protocols Collection: Books 1-4 by Dale Mayer

Broken Protocols Collection: Books 1-4 Broken Protocols Collection: Books 1-4 by Dale Mayer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A charming series that will keep you addicted all of the ways through.

#1 Cat's Meow - 3*

Dani Summerland has just turned the corner in her life when she is suddenly propelled into the future while holding in her arms her orange Persian cat, Charmin Marvin. Levi Blackburn tries to rein back his younger brother Milo in order to not break the strict government regulations but unknown to him Milo has been working on a secret project to get him a surprise present - Dani - who is a woman from the past that Levi has been fixated on for as long as he can remember. What he never anticipated was that she would arrive with a snarky talking cat. Can Dani adapt to the future and will Levi forgive Milo for this deliberate breaking of the strict rules?

This is a sweet novella that was a pleasant read. I'm hoping there is more detail about some of the restrictions in the future as the series progresses. Reasonably well written it was easy to understand and follow what was happening. An enjoyable introduction to the series.

#2 Cat’s Pajamas - 4*

Dani Summerland may have come from the past, but to save both their skins she marries Levi Blackburn. However, they are both pawns in a game with no rule book. Levi Blackburn is a lucky man who still can't believe he is married but they need to find out who exactly is after Dani so that they can have their long-anticipated honeymoon. However, as they struggle to find out who it is targeting them, the danger also escalates and people start dying. Thank goodness her talking cat Charmin Marvin is on their side and helping them - they'll need to break even more protocols, but if they don't their lives will be broken too.

I loved this story which has more detail and was more enjoyable than the first one. I liked the level of detail and the style of writing which was very clear and easy to understand. You need to have read the first book in order to understand the background of this one.

#3 Cat's Cradle - 4*

Dani and Levi Blackburn are out of the frying pan and into the fire as they start to uncover suggestions of a dangerous conspiracy that will lead right back to the foundation of their society and involve every single part of normal life. Can the get to the bottom of it and expose something that will shake society right through to its very core? People start to disappear and if it were not for the help of Milo (Levi's genius brother) and Charmin Marvin the talking cat they would also be missing if not dead by now. Whoever is behind all of this is weaving a complicated cat's cradle and unless they can find a way to expose the cover-up they will be next.

Wow - Dani is definitely coming into her own in this book and without intending to, becomes the main character in sorting some of this all out (even though she still can't use the modern tech that surrounds her). I loved the way the story developed and the ending was very powerful. Well written and easy to understand, it was easy to become addicted as you became desperate to find out what was going to happen next. Does contain a little sexual content but nothing detailed.

#4 Cat's Claus - *

Dani Blackburn realises that although she has gained a great deal being pulled 200 years into the future by her husband Levi's slightly abnormal, genius brother Milo, she has also lost a great deal when cat Charmin Marvin asks when Christmas Day will be in their new timeframe. It appears that all holidays were banned by the government a long time ago and Livi and Milo have no idea what they are talking about. Having done some research, Levi wonders if the can bring it back - even if it is just for their small family. However, those good intentions bring on a chain of reactions in a world that no longer tolerates such things when internet searches set off alarms. Can they get back on track and give Dani and Charmin Marvin the Christmas they crave?

This was a really sweet festive story that clearly showed how things have changed in the future and the trouble that this small family will go to for each other to give a little happiness. I loved the ending and the fact that they worked out more of how they could live together and have fulfilling lives. Well written and easy to understand.

Review: Crypto by Annie Nicholas 4 of 5 stars

Crypto (Cosmos Alien Mail Order Bride #3 / Intergalactic Dating Agency)Crypto by Annie Nicholas
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Diana Brooke was aware that aliens were real and was doing her best to track them down as they stole the Earth's resources and stealing tech from them in order to make money. She tracks some to a remote island as they are abducting humans and is determined to make them pay. Crypto is an agent with the Intergalactic Intelligence Agency (IIA) determined to tear apart the human trafficking ring but he ends up separated from the others in his team. There are a lot of the slavers so he can't do the rescue on his own. Then he meets a female human clad in mismatched alien warrior tech. She is the opposite of all his expectations of this planet’s fragile race. Whilst she makes it clear her hate for all aliens, she does agree to help him save all the humans. The nanotech makes him appear like a man but his real form is terrifying. Can he steal this thief’s heart so she can see past their differences?

I loved this story of Crypto and Diana which was both dramatic and filled with passion. Full of danger and drama they made a formidable team after they worked out their differences and started to trust each other. A great relationship which was very enjoyable to read and see develop as the story developed. A very dramatic ending. Does contain some sexual content.

Review: Hack by Annie Nicholas 3 of 5 stars

Hack (Cosmos Alien Mail Order Bride #2 / Intergalactic Dating Agency)Hack by Annie Nicholas
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Hack is on a mission for the Intergalactic Intelligence Agency with his team to stop human abductions as they are then sold as slaves. He was able to track the slave traders from the Cosmos Resort and Dating Agency, an alien singles vacation spot, to a cruise ship. The resort introduces voluntary humans to aliens as prospective mates. Any human on the cruise ship had chosen to have their memories wiped because they wanted nothing to do with aliens. Just as Hack is closing in on the slavers, he’s struck by lightning, short-circuiting his shapeshifting nanobots and cutting him off from his team. In an effort to hide, he uses the last of his strength to make himself look human before passing out in the closest bed. Jeannie Havers has a hot lead on a rare shark spotting and is determined to film it so she can shine a spotlight on sharks declining numbers and their importance to the ecosystem. her latest documentary that shone a spotlight on sharks declining numbers and their importance to the ecosystem. With her last few dollars, she books a cheap cruise to a singles resort near the sighting. She has seven days to find them. That is until she wakes up with the worst hangover ever next to the hottest man in the world. And he claims they are soulmates. Hack’s new face makes him weirdly irresistible to the local human women and impossible to go unnoticed by the slavers, but he’s stuck like this until his nanobots recover. Worse, his soulmate is one of the humans who had chosen to have her memories wiped because she didn’t want to be mated to an alien. Could he spend the rest of his life pretending to be human?

This was a sweet story telling us how Heck met Jeannie and how they worked together to further the same of breaking the case of the slave traders abducting women from Earth. It was nice to experience an alien that was helpless and the inventive ways that he managed to handle the situation while furthering the investigation. I loved the way the relationship between Hack and Jeannie developed. Well written and easy to read and understand. Does contain some sexual content.

Trace Trace by Annie Nicholas
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

At the Cosmos Resort and Dating Agency, you can find a place where aliens come to win the heart of a beautiful and rare human mate. It's supposed to be safe and protects the rest of the Earth from the knowledge of aliens. However, the Intergalactic Intelligence Agency (IIA) have grave doubts as they have discovered humans being sold on the black market and so three agents in the form of Trace and his 2 team members are sent there undercover in order to crack the case. Review: Defining Darkness by K.E. Osborn 5 of 5 stars

Defining Darkness (Royal Bastards MC: Tampa, FL, #1)Defining Darkness by K.E. Osborn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Nycto is President of the RB Tampa chapter MC and is well known for having absolutely no emotions, so he surprises everyone (including himself) when he decides to keep Eva when conducting a business transaction. This has a kind of domino effect on him but he knew that there was something very special about Eva that just called to him, and he would not be denied!

Wow - this had all the required features of an MC story. A brooding alpha male with hidden depth and emotions, with so many secrets. A beautiful woman who was incredibly sassy. The perfect combination. It was like being on a rollercoaster with all the secrets, emotions, twists, turns and the usual mixture of drama and danger from a story in an MC. Well written, easy to read and understand. This is definitely a book you will just devour. Does contain violence and sexual content.

Review: Keane by Dale Mayer 4 of 5 stars

Keane (The Mavericks #9)Keane by Dale Mayer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Having been backup on a mission, it was now the turn of Keane Lytton to lead a mission and he was joined by Lennox as a backup, although initially he feels cheated over being sent on a last-ditch rescue mission to Puget Sound as it seemed more like finding a body in a massive area. It appears that two women have gone overboard in a sailing accident but it isn’t exactly what he is expecting. Keane is nothing if not adaptable with his various skills and so he can only hope the two women are alive and doing everything they can to stay that way - especially when he hears from the local coast guard that more may be involved than just a rescue mission, so he and his partner load up and head out to search the waters around the smaller islands off the coast. They have the GPS of the missing women’s last-known location, but storms could have sent them anywhere so this is going to have to be a methodical search. Sandrine and her best friend Brenda are lost and alone - even worse Brenda is unconscious with a head wound. When Sandrine wakes up fully it becomes apparent that they are locked in a small shelter on an island. When the door is finally opened it is an armed stranger dressed in fatigues who dumps a small amount of food and tells her they are on their own. When Keane and Lennox finally finding the women was one thing but keeping them both safe is quite a completely different one, that something much harder to achieve as more is happening on the small island than any of them were expecting. Can they all get off the island safely and solve the mystery s to how they both ended up in the water? And can Keane and Sandrine find the time to explore whatever it is that is happening between them?

This was a dramatic story that contained drama, danger, betrayal and love. It was interesting to follow and get to the bottom of what happened to the girls and the motivations for those actions which were not obvious and quite surprising when the truth finally comes out. I loved the way the relationship between Keane and Sandrine slowly developed and became something so much more over time which gives them great promise for the future. Well written and easy to read, it was clear and easy to understand how the characters were feeling and thinking throughout the story. Does contain some sexual content at the end of the story.

Review: Stroke of Death by Dale Mayer 5 of 5 stars

Stroke of Death (Psychic Visions)Stroke of Death by Dale Mayer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well-known artist Cayce is widely respected in the art world but that has unfortunately attracted the wrong kind of attention as she now has forgers copycats and of course enemies. However, when her best friend and favourite model is murdered and the masterpiece painter on her skin is removed she knows that there is an art collector whos is completely different. Whilst Detective Richard Henderson doesn't know much at all about art, he does know what he likes and artist Cayce is what fascinates him the most. Hi might understand that her work contains an element of something extraordinary, he just doesn’t know what that is exactly or how she embodies it in her creative works of art. When other models show up dead with more sections of skin missing both Cayce and Richard realise that it is not just another art - it is also about her soul. Can they find out who it is before more models die and Cayce is one of the victims too, plus can they keep a lid on their growing attraction so they can concentrate on the case?

Wow, I loved this story. It was so dramatic and I found myself trying to work out who the murderer was as I read along with the story. I have to admit I was convinced it was one person when it actually turned out to be someone completely different. I loved the way the relationship between Cayce and Richard developed and that they became good friends far before they became something more. I liked the subtle involvement of some central characters in the Psychic Visions series. Well written, easy to read and understand I was seriously addicted to the story. Definitely recommended.

Review: Academy of the Fateful by Eva Chase 5 of 5 stars

Academy of the Fateful (Cursed Studies #3)Academy of the Fateful by Eva Chase
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Beatrice, or Trix, thought she had found a way to destroy the evil power that is trapping and torturing the students at Roseborne College in the previous book in this trilogy, but all she actually achieve was to let loose different horrors instead. The evil spirits are now flying free and are even more intend upon tormenting the students. Visions from the worst moments of their past stalk them like a ghost and foster brother Cade appears to have gone too far into the monstrous nature to be saved anymore. Can she hold it together enough to protect herself and the three guys she has fallen for let alone save the rest of the students too? Plus the supernatural energies she found in herself have their own aims too. As our most awful mistakes consume us, can we hold onto enough faith to keep up the struggle? And how much of myself will I have to sacrifice for a single chance at freedom?

This is the third book in a series and it makes much more sense if you have read the previous two first. I love the story and the way the evilness in the school is manifested and develops. The way the story finished was really unexpected and then pleasant as it developed further. Well written and very enjoyable, it was easier to read and very addictive. Does contain sexual content and a reverse harem.

Review: Dark Wine at Midnight by Jenna Barwin 4 of 5 stars

Dark Wine at Midnight (A Hill Vampire #1)Dark Wine at Midnight by Jenna Barwin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When a rogue vampire group emerges from the shadows to enslave mortals, research scientist Cerissa Patel is the only one with an inside track to stop them. With Henry watching her every move, she must uncover who's behind the rogue vampires and stop the assassin before Henry discovers what's hidden beneath her skin.

This was a great story which worked through the community, it's structure and how the relationship and trust between Cerissa and Henry started and grew. It was nice to work through and find out when was behind it all (which partially surprised me when it all came out. Well written and very enjoyable this was a good start to the series.

Review: Hotshot Deceiver by K.E. Osborn 5 of 5 stars

Hotshot Deceiver (Cocky Hero Club)Hotshot Deceiver by K.E. Osborn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lyric Griffin's family are all in the music business with her father an 80s icon and her siblings all in their own successful music careers - all except her who is hiding in plain sight as a talented florist.
Then along comes Eddie to buy flowers - he's gorgeous if a little cocky and she is completely attracted to him as is he to her. But when a secret of his raises it's ugly head she feels betrayed and stupid. - maybe she fell for a hotshot deceiver? Because as we all know, whilst we might always have secrets they always come out in the end.

This was a really sweet love story set around the worlds that both Eddie and Lyric live within. It was a great lesson in the effect that secrets can have on a relationship and how they will always come out at the most inopportune way and completely the wrong time. It was heartwarming to read the underlying love story between the two characters and to do it at different parts in the story from the point of view of just based on one of them and then based on just the other. Definitely something to pull at the emotions and give you goosebumps as it was so easy to become completely invested in their relationship. Well written it was very easy to read and understand. Does contain some sexual content.

Review: Throne of Death by Veronica Shade by Rebecca Hamilton, by Leigh Anderson 4 of 5 stars

Throne of Death (Academy of the Damned, #4)Throne of Death by Veronica Shade by , by
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Having enrolled at La Voisin hoping to learn how t control her magic, Madison is still searching for the Soule Grimoire but so far she is finding murder mysteries in the supernatural community -the problem is if she digs into this even more danger and she risks being expelled or even killed. However the largest mystery is what has happened to the Soule Coven - so she has to go to New Orleans and try to find their grimoire. In the end, it ends up being Madison’s best friend from the mundane world who helps her retrieve the book with the help of a Voodoo Priestess. But retrieving the grimoire is only half the battle. As Madison and her friends' race to save the Soule Coven before those imprisoning them realise their plot has been uncovered, they soon learn the villainous history of La Voisin runs much deeper than they ever thought.

Wow, this was an action-packed story where Madison made some new allies and learnt more about her powers. I liked the dynamic between Madison and her friends (both supernatural and mundane) snd how those relationships developed even with the events they navigated through. Well written it was easy to read and understand. I enjoyed the story a great deal and it certainly finished on a cliff hanger so I definitely NEED to know what happens next.

Troy (SEALs of Honor #23)Troy by Dale Mayer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A friend of Tesla has raised an SOS about an oil rig in trouble. Troy is despatched and has a good idea of what he is getting into and with no family back home he is fine with the maximum danger, the potential for betrayal, and the chances of not coming home sounding like the right kind of job. Then he meets Berkley at the oil rig who suddenly makes him see his future. Berkley knew something dangerous was going on on the oil rig - the damage to the oil rig could not have been an accident so must have been sabotage. So she asked to remain on board to until help arrives - she was just surprised at the size of the skeleton crew. It's going to take all of them to get to the bottom of this mess and to keep them alive, as human nature and Mother Nature combined to take them all out.

This was a real mystery as to what was going on and who was responsible. As the reader, I was able to work through the problem on the oil rig at the same time as Berkley and Tray and try to solve it myself. Well written and very enjoyable, I was addicted tot he story of both the sabotage and the romance between Troy and Berkley. Contains some sexual content.

Vampire in Geek's ClothingVampire in Geek's Clothing by Cassandra Lawson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Phoenix was born and destined to be a Hunter and has lived by strictly following the mantra to never tell anyone who and what she is. That has meant she has lived on her own and not got attached to anyone she meets. Then she meets Isaiah who makes her long for a normal life. However, he has secrets of his own. Can they have a life together? Isiah is actually a vampire who has sworn to do whatever it takes to protect her especially when it becomes clear that she is now being hunted by hunters. When they both find out the lies that they have each told each other can they walk away or is their attraction something worth fighting for?

This was a lovely story that had lots of angst as the characters fought with their own emotional demons before working through their attraction for each other as well as the danger that was hunting Phoenix. Can they both survive and have the HEA they both deserve? Well written and very enjoyable I definitely found I couldn't stop reading this after I had got into the story. However, she finds even the good guys hard to trust - although she can't get out of her head one particularly hot guy. Vampires and ruthless dragons lurk in the shadows, and it’s impossible to tell whose side fate will take. I just wish it hadn't been so boring through the first third of the book. Clear and easy to understand it was enjoyable if you persevered through the more boring section. Review: Dragon Riders of Elantia Books 1-3 by Jessica Drake 5 of 5 stars

Dragon Riders of Elantia Books 1-3 (Dragon Riders of Elantia, #1-3)Dragon Riders of Elantia Books 1-3 by Jessica Drake
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The first three books in this great series.

#1 Call of the Dragon - 5*
Zara Kenrook had been abandoned at an orphanage in childhood and by definition that meant she was destined to live in the slums but she has managed to gain a name as one of the best treasure hunters in Elantia. However she does have enemies and when one calls in a debt she is faced with an impossible decision - break into a dragon rider's house and steal a priceless object or lose her career and start again doing something else. However, the object she tries to steal is incorrect and is actually a dragon's egg which starts to hatch - when they see each other life will never be the same again.

Wow - this is a great story that had drama, twists and turns all through the book. I loved the concept of the world, the dragon riders and the scrapes she found herself in. It was well written and everything was well written and easy to understand and feel. I loved the ending and can't wait for the next book in the series now as I really need to know what happens next.

#2 Flight of the Dragon - 5*
Zara is a Dragon Rider and Lessie is her Dragon and when they met the certainly had no idea the sorts of trials and dangers they would have to face together. There have been several murders and kidnapping attempts so her enigmatic family head (Lord Tavarian) has transported them to a secret location to complete their training off the grid on a 1-2-1 basis. However, war is on the horizon and Salcombe is determined to find Zara - before they know it they are being attacked on all fronts and are forced to fight for a cause they are obliged to take part in even if they don't really believe in it. Can they follow the rules even if they know they are not always right or will the rebel streak that is so much part of Zara's character contribute to victory or will it be death?

Wow - I am loving the way the story has continued for Zara and Lessie. The challenge between duty and going against it to do the right thing were well described in the story and I could definitely feel the frustration and dilemma in the choices that had to be made. There were several moments where crucial moments were reached and decisions had to be made - I could understand all of the information and viewpoints including why she decided the way she did. Looking forward to the next book now so I find out what happens next!

#3 Might of the Dragon - 5*
Zara and Lessie are still separated and Zara is stuck in the clutches of Salcombe who keeps her behaving as if she is happy to be there by threatening both her and Lessie. By a combination of Zara's wits and Lessie's determination, she manages to escape only to be charged with treason and jailed before a court-martial.

Wow - loved this instalment of the story. It was amazing to read about Lessie's love and faith in Zara and what she would do into order to protect her. There was a lot of drama, danger and excitement in sections of the story and I loved the way it ended - I wondered it that might happen and now I'm hoping with everything that it works out and becomes a real and permanent thing (no I'm not going to tell you more - you just have to read it lol).

It seems prominent activist Charlotte Ankerby has been kidnapped from her hotel room just after she arrived there to speak at a rally and with her brother working deep undercover there are fears that this is related in order to blackmail him - he Nico has been asked with a buddy to try and find her quietly and quickly. For her part, Charlotte never wanted to make the trip in the first places she had decided to concentrate on writing books to get her message across, but she bowed to pressure only to be almost immediately kidnapped. When they find and rescue her it is only the start of what turns out to be an almost forensic examination of her family and her public life in order to identify the kidnapper and stay safe - especially as bodies start to pile up. Nothing makes sense in this mission as Nico is determined to keep Charlotte safe - especially as that takes on a more personal turn. Can they work it all out?

This was a dramatic story as they did everything they could in order to work out who was behind it. I enjoyed the process of working out who was responsible as it meant I could try to work it out too. The dynamic between Nico and Charlotte was really sweet as they worked through the mystery of the kidnapper as well as how her life had changed. Well written it was very enjoyable.
