Review: 1976: The Seven Book Six by Sarah M. Cradit 4 of 5 stars

1976: The Seven Book Six 1976: The Seven Book Six by Sarah M. Cradit
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

By 1976 the Deschanel siblings are parents and their childhood is long gone. Charles is torn between love for his son by the wife he despises and the prospect of having children with a woman who is welcoming to him. Augustus is a widower and focuses on his daughter Anasofiya to the exclusion of almost everything else. Colleen is married to the love of her life as she has to step into the shoes of the family matriarch. Genius Evangeline is in her new world in Cambridge but has to confront fears she and hoped were left behind long ago and Maureen's life is turned upside down in an unlikely connection. Elizabeth tried hard to be a caretaker for Augustus and Anasofiya while avoiding seeing her own future. The family will keep on moving through the seventies realising the power of fate they cannot avoid mixed n with secrets, lies and deceit.

This was a rollercoaster as many of their lives seemed to implode around them while the more stable influences tried to hold everything together for the rest of the family. Many of the events from previous years in the series came to fruition and it was interesting to see how each of these progressed. I think these books benefit from reading them in sequence and it helps to understand the family members and history behind many of the relationships. Well written, everything was clear and easy to understand. Very enjoyable.

Review: Eyes of Ice by J.C. Andrijeski 5 of 5 stars

Eyes of Ice Eyes of Ice by J.C. Andrijeski
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Nick is pulled into the world of underground boxing to help solve a case where they drain vampires for their blood and venom before extracting their heart and tossing them outside of the safety of the dome. He might still be suspended but that doesn't stop him from getting involved now reassure his girlfriend who now believes he has a death wish - especially as he does everything he can to avoid talking to her about whatever it is that is happening between them. Can Nick survive the ring and can he keep his relationship at arm's length?

This was a very dramatic instalment of the series with sections of graphic violence and sexual content in places. In this book we see Nick doing what he does best - going all in trying to find out who is behind the vampire harvesting/killing even if it puts himself in mortal danger. He also sticks true to form and doesn't handle relationships very well which was maddening to the point I could have throttled him at times!! Well written and easy to understand the thoughts and emotions that the characters were experiencing (even if I didn't always agree with them). If I had the chance to give Nick a message through the pages, it would be to stop being a dick and see what he has. Definitely recommended.

Review: Sinister Wizardry by Eva Chase 5 of 5 stars

Sinister Wizardry Sinister Wizardry by Eva Chase
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Rory is has had to stay at Bloodstone University aka Villain Academy over the summer to try and find some answers to outstanding questions as well as find a way to tackle her enemies. He tolerance is also wearing thin and so decides to hit back if necessary and not take her usual high road. as part of a new determination to protect those she cares about. She also has her hands full with the other scions and their treatment of her. Can Rory survive this hot summer?

I really loved this instalment of the story which saw the relationships between the scions and Rory develop which has great promise for later books in the series. There was a massive cliff-hanger at the end of this book which means I really need to know how the next one starts now. Well written and very enjoyable, it was really nice to see Rory coming into her own powers and yet still keeping her identity and personality. Whilst it is a reverse harem book, it is a very slow burn and so there is nothing particularly unusual in the story. A recommended great story.

Review: The Scorpion: Metamorphosis of Smoke by John A. Autero 4 of 5 stars

The Scorpion: Metamorphosis of Smoke The Scorpion: Metamorphosis of Smoke by John A. Autero
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When an old grey box is found in a basement the person who found it tries to connect to the mysterious person known as the “Folsom Street Avenger” with a fantastic tale of it being from a spaceship to try and find out what it is and see if it needs to be made public knowledge. But the Jack Arthur (who was the Avenger) is now retired and so it is passed on to his successor Bruce Herdino who is known as “The Scorpion”. Jack was never trained as an NSA agent and so this is way over his head, so he is paired with Special Agent Monica Deverow to head up the investigation and let him tag along. As they follow the clues through a timeframe of amazing secret projects around the first moon landing they are pursued by Stephen Harris, Senior Director of the NSA and a seriously sadistic and vicious piece of work. Can they get to the bottom of it all and survive the attentions of Harris?

This is a stand-alone continuation of the original The Scorpion book which does contain some repetition between the two but is still very enjoyable to read. It's a real combination of science fiction, fantasy and some real-life events from the past that have been woven together into this dramatic mystery. The characters were well developed and the writing was clear and easy to understand. A very enjoyable book.

Review: Aaron by Dale Mayer 5 of 5 stars

Aaron Aaron by Dale Mayer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Aaron Hammond is a former Navy SEAL and he has no idea how he arrived at Hathaway House in Texas. He was badly injured as part of betrayal that has destroyed his body, his career and his future and is consumed by a wave of profound anger that overtakes every other thought, feeling and experience he is currently having. Hathaway House is run by Dani Hathaway and her father. She knew Aaron and his brother Levi years ago and when she hears about Aaron (who she had a crush on years ago) she moves every obstacle to get him to her house for his rehabilitation determined to get him back to the way he used to be before the injury and anger. The old feeling will resurface as Dani constantly pushes him to accept that his life is not over but in fact, could be great.

This was a powerful first book in this new series which focussed on the physical, mental and spiritual healing that is needed after a serious military injury. The back story of the betrayal and old attraction was a nice touch that added lots of nice detail to this story. This was well written and suitably dramatic as well as suitably romantic. A lovely story with a sweet HEA at the end which will make you smile.

Review: Brett by Dale Mayer 4 of 5 stars

Brett Brett by Dale Mayer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Elite SEAL Brett is sent to rescue hostages from a yacht but when he discovers one of the hostages is now single ex-girlfriend Ceci and her kids it becomes much more personal. Ceci had walked away from Brett trying to find a way to heal but ended up a widow raising two kids. The master plan for life was to stay single and avoid the pain that relationships often come with but when she sees Brett she realises she was fooling herself. When safe suddenly becomes dangerous she realises she might not get a chance to correct her mistake - will everyone stay safe and can Ceci fix things?

This was a sweet story of the pain that can come with relationships and how communication is key. Add to that danger, determined killers and a hot SEAL and you get a recipe for lots of emotions, soul-searching and passion. The story was fairly believable and easy to get into so that you needed to know what was going to happen next. Well written and very enjoyable.

Bound by Water: Pisces Bound by Water by Monica La Porta
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Atreides is a famous painter and the only merman shifter alive. He also helps the police to recover stolen art from the many contacts he has within Rome. Ariel is a strong-willed human art thief who has sworn never to steal again when she is forced to do just one more job to repay a debt owed by her late father by stealing an Etruscan artefact. When they meet he is not looking for anything permanent, but a passionate kiss under the full moon is enough to intertwine their fates. Can they escape the werewolf biker gang after Arial and have a chance at a future?

This is a really sweet story with a few surprises as the story developed and they became more and more involved with each other. The story was well told and everything was clear and easy to understand. Very enjoyable and I definitely swept away into the drama that was unfolding and rooting for them to be happy together going forward. A very enjoyable read.

Review: Revenge of the Fae by Carly Fall 4 of 5 stars

Revenge of the Fae Revenge of the Fae by Carly Fall
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Avery Dubois is a half-fae but has never had contact with the fae side of her family and so acts as if she is just an ordinary human. She works on a construction site and when a close family member is murdered she notices that the murderer wasn't human which sets her on a path against authority and into danger. Gabe is a were-shifter prison guard and it appears a theft from his pack is related to the murder so into return for what information she has he breaks her out of prison. This is complicated as shifters and fae have had a mistrust of each other for several generations so they both don't know if they can trust the other. Can they work together to solve the mystery, or will they both end up dead?

I really enjoyed this story. It had a nice level of detail of the characteristics of the various paranormal races and their relationships with each other. The plot was interesting and the connection between the two cases was enough to connected Avery and Gabe together as was their need to find the truth. The story was reasonably well written and everything was easy to understand. An enjoyable story that made me wonder if this is the end of their working relationship or will they have a need to work together again in the future.

Review: SEALs of Honor: Books 7-10 by Dale Mayer 4 of 5 stars

SEALs of Honor SEALs of Honor by Dale Mayer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A great value boxset with some great light reads to feed your SEAL obsession.

#7 Markus - 4*

This is the story of how Markus met his perfect woman while a training exercise was derailed by local events. She seems to be a perfect match for him after he has been grieving following the death of his wife some time ago. Can they both come out of everything safely and will she decide to keep him or will his colleagues and friends get a chance to step in?

This was a charming story on how Markus met Bree and the events that threatened repeatedly to derail any chance of happiness they might have. A sweet story that was an enjoyable light read in the genre of SEAL meets the woman of his dreams. Well written, it was very enjoyable and very hard to put down as all the dramatic events unfolded.

#7.5 Mason's Wish - 4*

This is a novella set at Christmastime. Mason loves life with Tesla but he wants more than just living together - he wants it to be forever! So he decides to make it a memorable Christmas for them both. He calls her only to hear her cry out as she fights off an attacker. Racing to help he finds her missing (again). Tesla is determined to put bad memories behind her and is looking forward to a happy Christmas but it appears someone is nursing a grudge and has decided it is time for payback. Can Mason find Tesla and rescue her before they lose a future and each other?

This is a lovely Christmas story that sets you up nicely for the season with a healthy dose of the SEALs and their ladies that we know and love. There was plenty of dram and danger mixed into a mystery story that has a sweet resolution and a HEA. A nice quick read that is just right to set you into the Christmas spirit.

#8 Evan - 4*

Evan is considered a wildcard by everyone - including Megan. However unknown to her he is definitely carrying a torch for her and when she transfers to the West Coast their paths cross again when rescuing another SEAL unit who appears to be under attack in an apparent betrayal. Back at base Megan is the one under attack and so Megan and Evan need to stick together as they fight to keep her safe as well as work out who set them up. Can Evan keep her heart safe while Evan fights to keep her safe?

This is a charming story of how sometimes attraction cannot be denied especially when it is so right. Dramatic and with a mystery too it was a great light read that was very enjoyable. Well written, it is a light fun read with an added dose of drama, danger and mystery.

#9 Chase - 5*

Chase, like most other people, has a few secrets in his past, but his are rather dramatic and are about to resurface is a spectacular fashion. Vanessa is concentrating on moving forward with her life and not looking back as she doesn't want her painful memories from the past to shape her life going forward. But when she is embroiled in Chase's past the become her problems too. They both need to deal with the past in order to have a future - hopefully together.

Wow - this was a very dramatic story which has so much intrigue, drama and danger that it was almost non-stop action once it had started. It was a great tale of how love can come in the most trying of circumstances and that when it is right nothing is going to stop it - as long as they can both survive the situation that they are caught up in. An enjoyable read that was well written and addictive as the action flowed.

Review: Code Revelation by Boris Sanders 4 of 5 stars

Code Revelation Code Revelation by Boris Sanders
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Maximilian Gutenberg is a computer scientist who purchased a gift for his girlfriend and in the process inadvertently acquired a crystal containing a being trapped inside of it with the power to save or destroy humans called Lucy. To gain Max's trust in order to get him to help her with a secret mission, she offers to get rid of his rather nasty and abusive boss within one week and in the process make him a man worthy of recognition. This is a story set in a dystopian future in a city built miles into the sky where the value of taking control of your own destiny and the complicated balance between good and evil are part of the lessons he will realise. Can Max get through all of this unscathed and be able to help Lucy while helping himself?

This was a really enjoyable story that as I got more into it became more and more addictive. Yes, there were a couple of parts that I didn't enjoy but I enjoyed it a lot more than I didn't. It was well written and easy to read as well as understand. There was no complicated code so you won't find that difficult to understand (although a little bit of code might have added to the story). Max was an endearing character and it was easy to work out the bad guys just from the way they were described (which I have to admit made me annoyed with Max not seeing it either!). A good read that was very enjoyable

Gambling for Ashleigh (Police and Fire: Operation Alpha) Gambling for Ashleigh (Police and Fire: Operation Alpha) by E.M. Hayes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

After a breakup from her longtime boyfriend, Ashleigh Chapman moves to San Antonio and as part of doing everything she's ever wanted to try, she goes to a casino to learn how to gamble. Callum Young is an ex-police officer and finds the pretty blond sat next to him stirs something he hasn't felt since his wife died. When leaving, Ashleigh witnesses a murder and Callum decides to protect her whether she wants him to or not. With a dangerous loan shark after her, he pulls out all the stops to protect her especially when there is a growing attraction between them. As the stakes get higher and higher can Callum play his hand right and keep Ashleigh alive?

This was a really dramatic story that had all the right elements - drama, danger, an attraction between Ashleigh and Callum, and a challenge that seemed impossible to save her. This story was really addictive and I definitely found myself reading it faster and faster as I needed to know what happened next and if Callum was successful or not. Well written and a pleasure to read, you will find yourself addicted to this story too.

Review: Lingering by Melissa Simonson 5 of 5 stars

Lingering Lingering by Melissa Simonson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In this very imaginative book, death doesn't have to be the end as with certain conditions, Lingering can be just a phone call or text message away. You can get advice from them, and they can help celebrate your achievements or soothe your fears. All through the clever use of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

I loved the concept of this story and the result (even though I can imagine it would freak me out big time if it was possible for real). I can imagine this happing for real one day, so maybe the author is a fortune teller too? Well written and very enjoyable I could relate to all of the characters and understand the thoughts and emotions they were experiencing. Very enjoyable.

Deep Beneath Deep Beneath by Dale Mayer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Having completed her PhD Whimsy has an incident when kayaking in the shores outside Seattle which puts her into a coma type state where she has repeated nightmares repeating the sensations and event of her drowning in the water. She wakes up on a remote island with a strange male saviour, two unique dogs and lots of voices and sounds that she keeps hearing. Nothing makes sense to her. Samson, heard the cry to save a woman washed up his island shore and he has no clue that she is going to have a massive impact on both his and his brother's lives. Everything gets far more complicated when they discover a research group that have been illegally conducting experiments on the tectonic plates that are giving unexpected consequences deep beneath. Can Whimsey and Samson solve all the mysteries and fix everything that is affected?

Wow - this is a powerful story that describes so many different things in the one book. First, you get the slow burn love story between Whimsey and Samson. Then all the psychic involvement and the impact on the ocean and creatures within it by the experiments. Then the various betrayals involved between some of the players in the story and the development of interaction between Samson and Whimsey and Samson's brother. A very enjoyable story that was very easy to read and gives a message on the environment that we should all be heeding. Well written and very easy to understand and feel the thoughts and emotions of the characters.
