Fire and Rain

Fire and Rain by Andrew Grey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Josten Applewhite has fought to keep his younger brother Isaac safe since their mother died, but one terrible stroke of bad luck leaves them homeless. Officer Kip Rogers finds them and, unable to walk away, brings them into his home while they get back on their feet. With Kip’s help, Jos begins rebuilding his life, though he struggles to trust such generosity. Kip, meanwhile, is falling for Jos and loves the sense of family they bring to his house. When a distant relative threatens to tear Jos and Isaac apart, Kip knows Jos needs him — even if Jos isn’t ready to admit it.

This was a heartbreaking story as we learned how Jos and little Isaac ended up on the streets, doing everything they could just to survive. Isaac absolutely stole the show — it was impossible not to smile (and cry) when the group of cops rallied together to find his missing bear. Moments like that gave the story such warmth. I loved seeing the guys and their partners from the previous books step in, each of them playing a part in helping Jos rebuild his life. Their support became even more important when Jos’s aunt suddenly appeared, determined to take Isaac away, and everyone stood behind Jos to fight for his family. At its core, this book was about how trust is painfully earned when life has dealt you nothing but misfortune, and how love can creep up on you even when you’re sure you don’t deserve it. Lots of emotions and feelings throughout — tender, aching, and hopeful. This was an MM story with mature content.
