My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Orion never wanted to be a father, but fear kept him from telling his wife. As their negative tests bring him relief and her distress, he spirals, spending his nights at Faded Sins drawn to Sable — the one man he can’t stay away from. Sable is just trying to survive, doing what he must to pay his bills, until Orion becomes the client he breaks his own rule for. Their connection complicates everything, especially when Sable discovers Orion’s secrets run far deeper than he ever expected.
I really struggled to find the redemption in this story. Orion was a character I grew to genuinely dislike — selfish with his wife, and then selfish again with Sable on the side, with very little real effort to resolve the situation he created. His choices caused most of the emotional turmoil in the book, and often for the people around him rather than himself. Sable, on the other hand, was the standout. His determination to survive, even through sex work, made him compelling and sympathetic. And I felt deeply for Whitney, Orion’s wife — an innocent party who became a victim of his infidelity and indecision. There were plenty of emotions throughout, but many of them were driven by Orion’s behaviour and the fallout it caused. A difficult, messy story that left me feeling for everyone except the man at its centre. This was an MF and MM story with mature content.
