Rise of the River-Man: Mutter's Story by L.S. O'Dea
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Unwanted guard Mutter is facing death when he is given a chance - an Almighty says if he will agree to obey (in this case by brutally killing a child) he will take him to work for him. He is then taken to a lab which contains caged strange creatures that bare no relation to anything he has seen before. Then his masters give him shots and taking blood and he starts to fear that he is changing to something else - much more like the creatures in the cages.
I enjoyed this story of Mutter and all the events that happened to him. There were sections when I was appalled at his treatment, enthralled by the bond he had with the one person who helped him, and heartbroken at the way the story ended with such loss. Well written and enjoyable, it was easy to understand.
