A collection of prequels of the two series that centre around Shapeshifters and Lightbearers. The two groups have been mortal enemies for over 500 years. Shapeshifter Xander Wulf has the single goal in life to track and kill Lighbearers in the belief that if he kills one he will inherit their magic. However, when he finds some, a badass female doesn't run from him but actually stands and fights (almost winning). And so he changes his goal to not kill her but to track and find her so he can learn more about Sabine Flemming. Still holding a candle for Sabine after she shared her magic with him, Xander is determined to leave his past behind and take a temporary respite with a tribe of humans where he finds shifter Adelle Poema hiding among them while she mysteriously bides her time so she can take revenge against the chief's son. Adelle believes that she is broken and cannot move past a burning desire for revenge but then she meets Xander. Now Adelle must choose … Revenge or love?
This was a fitting start to the series and perfectly set the scene so that I understand the two races, their general skills, and the history between them. It was a good introduction and definitely makes me wonder what happens next. Well written, easy to read and understand. I liked the fact that the two women were both powerful and at the centre of each story.
