Marcus Dagotto is a Vampire Guardian and is sworn to safeguard humanity. After the death of his mate some three hundred years ago and at risk of a curse that will catapult him into bloodlust, he is focussing on protecting his king and getting through each day. He has learnt that when the gods interfere it is not a good thing and this is his thought as they decide to destine him with a new mate - a human. He tried really hard to resist her but when she ends up in trouble his instinct demands that he step in and protect her. Cassandra Jensen was ditched at the altar and so she has sworn off men forever. But when a sexy stranger keeps visiting her dreams and seducing her she starts to think about her life even though he is just a figment of her imagination. That is until he steps into her world for real. She then learns that his world is full of things that go bump in the night and that something evil is coming to claim him. To protect herself she has to lose him but then to save him from the darkness she is going to have to make the ultimate sacrifice where she will become the sliver of light that will save his soul.
I really enjoyed this story which was a great introduction to the series and told the story of Marcus and Cassie perfectly. It was full of danger, drama, twists and turns as there was betrayal and the occasional double-cross that meant it was a rollercoaster ride through locations, where the direction of the danger chopped and changed at will. Well written, easy to read and understand, I can't wait to find out what happens next and find out if any other guardians find their mate. I have to admit when one of the characters had their head chopped off near the end I punched the air.
