Review: The Hollow by Debbie Herbert 5 of 5 stars

The Hollow

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lydia is branded as a witch by local people in the town of Peculiar and so bears silent testimony to the Appalachian town's dark roots. Some people believe that the bad luck began when a teenage partying spree one night led to the preacher's son falling to his death, but Lydia knows it started when a child never made it home from school, an arsonist set the mountain ablaze and when her daughter seemed to vanish. Sadly the past can't remain buried forever when she looks at the bees swarm and the auras that she sees change. Clara who was there when the accident happened has returned with her daughter and that sets off a new wave of violence and betrayals. The local sheriff has organised a meeting with all of the suspects at the abandoned church where his brother mysteriously died. The secrets will finally be laid bare and the killer revealed.

I loved this book with its mixture of suspense, intrigue, mystery and magic. The characters were all rendered carefully so that I could picture them in my mind as I read through the book. Some events give a great distraction so I was completely surprised when the final killer was revealed. I loved Clara who felt responsible for something that was not her fault but I can understand why she felt that way. The meeting was suitably dramatic and full of suspense as secrets were revealed. Easy to read and understand, you will find this book addictive.
