Review: A Fraudulent Encounter by Valerie J. Clarizio 4 of 5 stars

A Fraudulent Encounter

A Fraudulent Encounter by Valerie J. Clarizio
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Police Chief Daxon Mertz is now working in a small town after a drug investigation in the city led to the murder of his wife and unborn child. Divorcee Natasha Kane is getting over being pushed aside for a younger woman and is the small town's Municipal Treasurer. Having met at work they start a secret relationship. When over a quarter of a million dollars goes missing from the town's treasury Dax has to impartially investigate Natasha which then makes her feel betrayed and hurt. Can they both get over the feelings of betrayal, suspicion and scandal?

I really enjoyed this story with the two damaged people finding that love was still possible, the fraud investigation with the many possible candidates and how they worked out who the guilty person was. It was great to read along and follow the steps of the investigations with them. It was easy to understand everything and pick up their thoughts and feelings. I did find the ending a little abrupt as I didn't equate some meals and nights together as enough to justify a permanent future together (although Dax did have style).

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
