Review: Asher by Dale Mayer 4 of 5 stars

Asher (The Mavericks #5)Asher by Dale Mayer

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When SEALs get sick of following rules because they hold them back from doing the right thing they either accept it or walk away. However, for a select few there is an alternative - they can join The Mavericks - a covert black ops team that gets the job done (even if they have to break the occasional rule on the way). In the previous book in this series, Asher Tromblay had helped Beau Madison when Beau too the lead in a mission for the Mavericks and now it was Asher's turn to lead one. He is given the mission of finding a set of female autistic twins in mainland China with an old friend and colleague Ryker as his backup with a plus one which more than raises his eyebrows. The plus one is Mickey who is none other than Asher's ex-fiance and was the nurse who was looking after the twins and with them when they were kidnapped. When Mickey sees Asher and works with him to find the twins she starts to realise what a mistake she made ten years ago. Can they dive through all the layers of betrayals, lies deceit and a growing list of bodies to find out who was really responsible for the kidnapping and who has been on a killing spree? At the end will Mickey get her heart's desire and get a second chance with Asher or will he reject her?

This story had plenty of drama, mystery and action as they travelled through China and worked their way through the complex layers of betrayal, lies, deceit and violence to work out who was responsible for each level of the plot and who should pay for everything that had happened. It way that Asher and Mickey worked through their issues was very realistic and I loved the way that they struggled to see what was happening between them. Well written and easy to understand you do not need to read the previous books in the series to enjoy these books. There is sexual content at the final stages of the story.
