My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Penn, a man who can’t feel pain or fear, has spent his life drifting and hiding from a world that treats him like a monster. Everything changes when he rescues two children from a burning house — unknowingly saving the family of Gideon, a powerful mob boss and devoted single father. Determined to find the mysterious hero who saved his twins, Gideon is stunned to discover a man who awakens feelings he thought had died with his wife. As a brewing war threatens Gideon’s territory, the two men are pulled into danger together, forced to fight for survival and the unexpected bond growing between them.
I loved this story and what stood out most was the richly detailed look into Penn’s background — his isolation, his belief that he’s a monster, and the heartbreaking way his inability to feel pain or fear had shaped every part of his life. Those layers made him an unforgettable character, and seeing the world through his eyes added real emotional weight to the book. The rising war on the streets brought sharp tension, and the danger surrounding Gideon’s world built steadily until it exploded around them. I loved how the emotions of everyone involved were written — not just Penn and Gideon, but the children and the extended family too. Their fear, hope, and love were all vividly felt, grounding the action in something deeply human. A gripping blend of danger, emotion, and connection, with characters who stayed with you long after the final page. This was an MM story with mature content.
