My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Sam’s football career ends after a spinal injury, sending him to a new life working in a tattoo shop — and unexpectedly becoming guardian to his cousin’s baby, Maisy. She becomes his whole world just as retired NHL star Niko Pagonis arrives in town. Niko is charming and genuinely interested, but Sam is overwhelmed by a tough custody battle and doubts he has room for romance. Yet Niko doesn’t pull away, and Sam begins to hope that love might survive even the hardest moments.
This story had an irresistible pull between Sam and Niko, even though their growing connection had to take a back seat to Sam’s desperate fight to keep Maisy in the face of prejudice and unfair scrutiny. That tension — wanting each other but needing to protect a child first — gave the book so much emotional weight. Both men carry their own struggles, and watching them slowly realise they could build a future together took real strength and determination. I loved how their feelings deepened alongside their courage, and how Niko stood steady even when things got tough. The story is full of love, raw emotions, and heartfelt moments — and Maisy is absolutely adorable. It’s the kind of book that makes you smile because you genuinely want this little family to make it. This was an MM story with mature content.
