Karzin by Elin Wyn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Now the Xathi have been defeated the rebuild of buildings, communities and friendships have begun. Human geologist Annie Parker hopes that working in her quiet laboratory gives her family the time and space to heal. Then a mysterious seismic eruption shakes the world as she knows it again. Teamed up with the surly Valorni and Strike Team Leader Karzin, Annie just wants to get her job done by investigating the incident and getting back to her comfortable place - her lab. That means she will ignore the flashes and sparks whenever she touches the man hidden inside the bitter shell. Karzin is angry - the war for the planet Ankou was never something he wanted to fight - he needs to go home and work on saving his own people. His team might have settled into helping the humans to rebuild their cities and has made their own life with human women, but he has to find a way back to his homeworld or die trying. So when General Rouhr orders him to help the tiny human woman with her research only his long military discipline allows him to focus and go to her side to help. But once he's there, it'll take more than the attacks of this strange new enemy to drag him away from her. And when even their memories are under siege, Karzin and Annie may find they have something worth fighting for after all.
I really enjoyed this story with the very surly and focussed Karzin and the focussed (for other reasons) Annie. They really were a match made in heaven and there was definitely a type for the Valorni as it was too similar. I enjoyed the drama and danger involving the cause of the earthquakes and their links to the history of the planet and the war with the Xathi. It was great to involve so many of the major characters and their partners in the previous books. Well written and very easy to read and understand. Contains explicit sexual content.
