Sakev by Elin Wyn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Originally from Fraga, Dr Evangeline Parr (Evie) lost everything when the Xathi attacked, so when she is asked to establish a new clinic in Einhiv she immediately says she will help. However, she has to have smartass and constantly joking Skotan warrior Sakev with her. That view changes when they are in a new explosive situation when she sees a protective and efficient side to him that intrigues her. Sakev joined the Skotan fleet after an unusual career which has relegated his past to the background as the fight against the Xathi has intensified. What he never expected was for a human to break through his constructed facade and as things adapt and change keeping Evie safe becomes far more than just another mission - it instead becomes the only mission he cares about.
I really enjoyed the surly joker of Sakev and how he suddenly found he had to adjust his thinking and priorities as the fireworks between him and Evie morphed from just disagreements on approach/results and became something far more personal between them. I loved the way he then became dogged in his determination to protect her at all costs to himself. He was heartened to see that he had adapted into something more like a partnership and real affection as it was obvious at the start that they both irritated each other. Easy to read and understand. Contains explicit sexual content.
