My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Chase, a hippo shifter working undercover, discovers that the gang he’s infiltrating has bound Rhys, a witch whose magic lives in his voice. Rhys realizes instantly that Chase is his familiar, even though it’s the last thing he wants. Finding his mate trapped forces Chase to choose between keeping his cover… or saving Rhys.
This instalment pushed the wider mystery forward nicely — the coven and the team were closer to uncovering what’s happening to the missing witches, and it felt like fate that Chase and Rhys met at the exact moment Chase was trying to free him. I especially loved all the doubts swirling in Rhys’s head despite their bond; it made him far more relatable and grounded, especially with everything he’d endured. The coven came across as ruthless, disturbingly willing to sacrifice Rhys’s magic without hesitation, which added real tension to the plot. There were plenty of emotions and feelings throughout, all clearly written, even if the fast pace kept them moving quickly. A strong, engaging addition to the series. This was an MM story with mature content.
