Kirk Gracewell returns to Madison Gully after twenty years, now a powerful energy vampire, determined to avenge his sister’s murder by a cougar shifter. During the cougars’ rare clan gathering, the seer assigns Sage to watch the newcomer — a task he resents until their tense back‑and‑forth becomes unexpectedly intriguing. But once Sage learns Kirk’s true purpose, he must choose between protecting his family and helping him find the killer, who is willing to strike again to claim the coveted role of a witch’s familiar.
The beginning felt tedious to me, but thankfully the story soon picked up and became far more engaging. Once the danger and drama ramped up, it turned into a real race against time to uncover who killed Kirk’s sister and to sort out the undeniable connection between him and Sage. I appreciated how the tension kept building, and there were plenty of emotions and feelings woven throughout as the mystery deepened and their bond grew under pressure. A slow start, but ultimately an enjoyable, dramatic read once the momentum kicked in. This was an MM story with mature content.
