Review: The Siren's Familiar by T.J. Nichols 4 of 5 stars

The Siren's Familiar

The Siren's Familiar by T.J. Nichols
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Chase, a hippo shifter working undercover, discovers that the gang he’s infiltrating has bound Rhys, a witch whose magic lives in his voice. Rhys realizes instantly that Chase is his familiar, even though it’s the last thing he wants. Finding his mate trapped forces Chase to choose between keeping his cover… or saving Rhys.

This instalment pushed the wider mystery forward nicely — the coven and the team were closer to uncovering what’s happening to the missing witches, and it felt like fate that Chase and Rhys met at the exact moment Chase was trying to free him. I especially loved all the doubts swirling in Rhys’s head despite their bond; it made him far more relatable and grounded, especially with everything he’d endured. The coven came across as ruthless, disturbingly willing to sacrifice Rhys’s magic without hesitation, which added real tension to the plot. There were plenty of emotions and feelings throughout, all clearly written, even if the fast pace kept them moving quickly. A strong, engaging addition to the series. This was an MM story with mature content.

Review: The Detective's Familiar by T.J. Nichols 4 of 5 stars

The Detective's Familiar

The Detective's Familiar by T.J. Nichols
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sam, a wolf shifter, has walked out on his husband and fated mate, Mark. But when a killer starts targeting witches and Mark fears he’s next, he asks Sam for help. Sam agrees only to keep the mate bond from breaking him if Mark dies — not because he’s forgiven him. Mark, desperate for a second chance, is willing to do anything to prove he’s worth it… even give up his magic.

I really liked the way this book ran parallel stories — the tense investigation into witches being killed alongside the deeply personal journey of Sam and Mark’s relationship, their mate bond, and their familiar connection. The contrast between the professional danger and their emotional struggle made the story feel layered and engaging. Part of me understood Sam’s hurt, but part of me felt he was being quite selfish, especially given how powerful their bond was. There was plenty of danger and drama, especially once Mark became the focus of an attack, which raised the stakes in a meaningful way. The whole book was full of emotions and feelings, with Sam wrestling his heart and Mark doing everything he could to understand. It’s a story where the external threat and the internal conflict mirror each other, creating a deeply emotional journey around Sam and Mark. This was an MM story with mature content.

Review: The Vet's Christmas Familiar by T.J. Nichols 3 of 5 stars

The Vet's Christmas Familiar

The Vet's Christmas Familiar by T.J. Nichols
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Kit is shot down on Christmas Eve while flying in hawk form and ends up badly injured and unable to shift back. He’s taken to Errol Hart, a lonely vet who can usually talk to animals — just not this strangely intelligent hawk. As Kit heals, he grows attached to Errol and fears what will happen when he reveals he’s actually human… and wants something more than rescue.

What I really enjoyed in this story was the connection between Kit and Errol — a bond that didn’t need a mate mark or familiar magic to make it real. They just had to trust that their attraction was genuine on its own, and I loved watching them reach that point together. They worked side by side, accepting help when they needed it, which made their growing relationship feel grounded and earned. The emotional weight was strong throughout, especially with Kit’s devastating loss and everything he was trying to survive. Errol’s ability to talk to animals added such warmth and charm, and the way the animals helped him was one of my favourite parts. A story full of feelings, healing, and a connection that was always meant to be. This was an MM story with mature content.

Review: The Rock Star's Familiar by T.J. Nichols 4 of 5 stars

The Rock Star's Familiar

The Rock Star's Familiar by T.J. Nichols
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Dylan, a runaway hex‑witch turned rock star, is forced home after his brother’s death, where snake‑shifter enforcer Eamon is sent to retrieve him. Their simmering attraction grows during a tense road trip, even though witches shouldn’t be with shifters and Eamon shouldn’t want the boss’s son. Rules break, feelings spark, and both men start wanting freedom — and each other.

What I loved most was the undeniable connection between Dylan and Eamon — a pull that was always there, even with their messy history and all the rules stacked against them. They just needed to be clever enough to find a way to make it work, and watching them navigate that tension was incredibly satisfying. The story had some great twists and turns, and the moment with the snake eating a mouse as the inspired solution to their problems was such a standout — unexpected, smart, and perfectly in line with the world’s magic. A romance full of longing, danger, and ingenuity, with two men determined to claim the future they want. This was an MM story with mature content.

Review: The Vampire's Familiar by T.J. Nichols 3 of 5 stars

The Vampire's Familiar

The Vampire's Familiar by T.J. Nichols
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Kirk Gracewell returns to Madison Gully after twenty years, now a powerful energy vampire, determined to avenge his sister’s murder by a cougar shifter. During the cougars’ rare clan gathering, the seer assigns Sage to watch the newcomer — a task he resents until their tense back‑and‑forth becomes unexpectedly intriguing. But once Sage learns Kirk’s true purpose, he must choose between protecting his family and helping him find the killer, who is willing to strike again to claim the coveted role of a witch’s familiar.

The beginning felt tedious to me, but thankfully the story soon picked up and became far more engaging. Once the danger and drama ramped up, it turned into a real race against time to uncover who killed Kirk’s sister and to sort out the undeniable connection between him and Sage. I appreciated how the tension kept building, and there were plenty of emotions and feelings woven throughout as the mystery deepened and their bond grew under pressure. A slow start, but ultimately an enjoyable, dramatic read once the momentum kicked in. This was an MM story with mature content.

Review: The Witch's Familiar by T.J. Nichols 4 of 5 stars

The Witch's Familiar

The Witch's Familiar by T.J. Nichols
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Jude Sullivan reluctantly travels to a remote town to investigate a creature killing livestock, determined only to prove to the Coven he isn’t a threat. The last thing he wants is a familiar — or the attraction he feels toward Rob Mackenzie, the local man hiding the fact he’s a bear shifter. One impulsive kiss reveals they’re fated mates, complicating everything just as the danger escalates. Working together, Jude and Rob must stop the creature and figure out why fate paired two complete opposites.

I loved the unexpected intensity of that single kiss and how it instantly bound Jude and Rob together, even though neither of them was happy about it at first. Their reluctant connection made the unfolding relationship feel wonderfully tense and compelling. The mysterious creature was a great adversary, and I really enjoyed that it took both of their strengths (Jude’s magic and Rob’s shifter instincts) to take it down. The investigation had a smart, engaging feel to it. The politics within Jude’s coven added another intriguing layer, hinting that something deeper might be at play beyond the creature attacks. With danger, drama, and plenty of emotion, this story delivered a satisfying mix of paranormal tension and growing affection between two reluctant mates. This was an MM story with mature content.
