Akai, a dramatic mothman, secretly watches Cole as he builds a cabin in the woods, telling himself it’s only to keep the human safe — though his feelings say otherwise. Cole has sensed a presence for months, but during a meteor shower he finally sees the creature shift from man to wolf to something winged. His warning shots leave Akai injured at his feet, forcing both men to confront a shared, painful past.
This story had an undeniable connection between Akai and Cole, one that stretched across every moment their paths crossed, past and present. Their initial reluctance to accept the possibility of a mate bond added a welcome layer of angst, and their curiosity about each other’s very different anatomy was handled in a thoughtful, non‑sensational way that fit the tone of the romance. The emotions throughout were clear, easy to understand, and gave the story real heart. I did find the ending a little strange — they seemed bonded and committed, yet not living together — which left me with questions. Still, the journey between them was compelling, tender, and full of feeling. This was an MM story with mature content.
