Dan, a former foster kid who now devotes himself to raising children with disabilities, is in the process of adopting Lila and Jerry when he hires Connor — another man shaped by abandonment — to make his home wheelchair accessible. As they work together, their shared pasts and quiet resilience spark a connection, forcing both to decide whether opening their hearts to love and family is worth the risk of being hurt again.
This was such a heartfelt story, centred on two men with big, generous hearts who’ve both known what it feels like to be unwanted — and who now pour that love into children who need it most. It became clear so quickly that Dan and Connor had room for each other too, if they were willing to take that risk. I loved their connection and how much they had in common, especially the tenderness they showed toward Lila and Jerry. The affection they gave so freely made the story shine, and I appreciated how hard they worked to treat the kids as normal children with normal hopes and dreams, not defined by their disabilities. There was plenty of passion, emotion, and feeling throughout — all easy to understand and feel right alongside them. A beautifully emotional read about love, healing, and choosing family. This was an MM story with mature content.
