Officer Red Markham, scarred and grieving, works Carlisle’s streets as drug overdoses rise. Lifeguard Terry Baumgartner saves a drowning child, and a misunderstanding pushes him to rethink his kindness. Delivering meals brings him to Margie — Red’s outspoken aunt — linking their lives. As Red investigates the town’s drug problem and shields Terry from a dangerous ex, the two men begin to see past appearances and find the possibility of something real.
This was a nice story, but I struggled with a few things — especially Terry’s shallowness early on and why Red was still so deeply grieving when his injuries weren’t fresh anymore. Their sudden leap into love also felt rushed, making it hard to fully believe in their connection. That said, I did enjoy the mystery thread: the new, deadly version of the drug hitting Carlisle and the strange delivery method behind it. The “who” was fairly obvious, but the real tension came from proving it, which kept the plot moving. Overall, a mixed but still enjoyable read, even if the romance didn’t quite convince me. This was an MM story with mature content.
