My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Pax has survived Terrafeara by staying untouchable — until Varek, the Riftborn commander who killed his husband, returns and claims they’re fated mates. Forced together in a collapsing world, they’re pulled toward each other even as war, worsening rifts, and old wounds threaten to tear everything apart. They should be enemies, but they might be each other’s only chance — and love may be the most dangerous force they face.
What stood out most was the care and patience Varek gave Pax, giving him all the space he needed to adjust to the mate bond even when Pax’s stubbornness dragged out the pain far longer than it had to. Their dynamic was fascinating, especially because Pax is such a strange mix of kindness, sharp intelligence, thoughtlessness, and tunnel vision, all wrapped into one complicated man. The story delivered plenty of danger and drama, not just from the Queen and her army but also from tensions simmering within the rebel forces. That layered conflict made the world feel unstable in all the right ways. A gripping, emotional read where two very different men navigate power, trauma, and a bond neither expected and somehow make it work. This was an MM story with mature content.
