My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Denali once believed he and his best friend Abel were destined mates, but their first shift on Christmas Eve shatters that dream when Abel’s wolf doesn’t recognise him. Heartbroken, Denali avoids home every holiday, hiding in his college town. This year, a panic lie sends him to a random rental for Christmas — only to find himself sharing a bed with the very past he’s been running from.
The first half of this story pulled me in with its pacing, emotion, and setup — but the second half shifted so quickly that it felt like the romance and deeper storytelling were pushed aside. It was a bit jarring to see Denali and Abel suddenly confess everything and then, within two days, become mates, marked, and engaged. The emotional beats were there, but they didn’t have enough space to land. That said, the writing itself is easy to follow, the characters are engaging, and the premise is charming. I just wish the later chapters had slowed down enough to let the romance breathe. This was an MM story with mature content and set in the omegaverse with MPREG.
