Review: Stalking Their Mate by Tamsin Baker 3 of 5 stars

Stalking Their Mate (Perfect Pairs #2)Stalking Their Mate by Tamsin Baker
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Ashleigh has escaped a broken marriage where she was never enough (insert smart, pretty or thin). Now free, happy and strong she travels to the Rocky Mountains to attend the wedding of her cousin when she feels her skin prickle from a hot man's gaze. Determined that he might melt her panties but is not getting into them silver-tongued Jack wins her over with his sexy smile and charisma as he worships her from head to toe until the wall around her heart cracks. She didn't want a man and certainly not two but his twin brother intrigues her. Scott has a damaged soul and as hard as he tries to push her away his soul still calls out to hers. Between the three of them, they have enough baggage from the past to sink the Titanic and more but it seems that fate has its own plans for them all. The mountain lion shifters are fated to share a mate and that is Ashleigh even though she will need to convince Scott that there is enough love left in the world for the three of them but he will have to trust her to protect his fragile heart. Will they all get the HEA that they deserve?

I really enjoyed this story which showed quite clearly how bad decisions when we are younger mean that it is much harder when you try and correct them and then try again when you are older. I enjoyed their hesitancy and the way that they had to learn to trust each other going forward. The existing family complications were fun and I was thrilled when Scott was able to fully commit to Ashleigh and their triad. Easy to read and understand. Contains explicit sexual content some of which is MMF.

Review: Chicago Defiance Motorcycle Club Box Set by K.E. Osborn 5 of 5 stars

Chicago Defiance Motorcycle Club Box Set (Chicago Defiance MC, #1-8)Chicago Defiance Motorcycle Club Box Set by K.E. Osborn
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a great value box set containing eight great books - forget your TBR list as this will require your complete attention.

#1 - Resistance - 5*

Torque is the President of the Defiance MC whilst Heely is a medical student who works in her family's Froyo store to both help them and have some kind of an income. They would strike you as two sides of a coin until they meet and there is an instant attraction. However, he has 2 problems to handle - the club owned by the MC is having issues with the local mafia (Andretti family) and the second one - the fathers of both families have a historic feud over the city too. Can their fledgling relationship survive such an atmosphere? Can Defiance and the Andretti family pull back from out and out war?

I loved this story. It had pretty much everything you expected from an MC romance book and then some. There were battles, injuries, healing, emotion, brotherhood, compromise and passion in this story. It was well told by the author and it was easy to empathise and feel the thoughts and emotions of the characters in the story. I'm looking forward to the next instalment in their story as I feel quite attached to them.

#2 - Penance - 4*

Sensei is surrounded by drama - his family is hiding from the Japanese Yakuza (an organisation that wants to buy and control everything), his club is at war with them (they want to control Chicago and push everyone else out) and then he meets a woman called Spanner who is the shining light in his world (even though now isn't really the time). She is the complete opposite of him but it's like he is an addict and cannot stay away. You would think it would never work but in a bizarre way, they complement each other completely. Can everyone survive when it seems to all relate to what happened in the past because bloodshed is definitely coming - it's just a case of who is going to pay penance for the sins of the past?

This was a story full of drama, danger and passion. It was lovely to see more of the human side of these MC members that seem to always be there breaking the stereotypes we all have in our heads. It was also great to realise that Sensei is not the robot that he seemed in the first book but is human, has feelings and his connection to Spanner should continue to soften his harder edges. Well written and easy to read and understand I loved the way the story developed from a more localised problem to something quite personal

#3 - Deviance - 4*

When Mylee walked away and the shock of that made Trax what he is today. However, when she renters his life under threat he is the only one who can protect her even if it means that they all find out why she left. This story is going to be a wild ride which will also be a perfect example of Defiance.

This was a great story that had so much drama, twists and turns that it almost made you a little dizzy with it all. It was also a master class in politics and handling it whether within an MC or anything else (our politicians could learn a thing or two). I loved the way this was yet another story in the series featuring another couple navigating the choppy seas of love and coming out the other side which was completely different to the other ones. This was clearly written and easy to understand while still capturing my attention and getting me hooked. Definitely an enjoyable read that is worth your investment in both money and time.

#4 - Sufferance - 5*

Tremor is a prospect in the Defiance MC Club but is also in love with Neala (Lala) - however, she is the Torque the Club President's little sister and has basically told him to stay away from her. So he feels he has a choice - the Club or her? There is also some betrayal on the way - can they all survive it and can he get the girl he loves as well as the patch he desperately wants?

Wow - there were so many twists, turns and lots of drama in this story. Granted there were times I wanted to bang some heads together and try to make sense prevail but they did eventually get with the program! The betrayal was definitely a surprise in several ways but that in itself was charming and a welcome antidote to some misconceptions. Well written and a great read it was perfect for anyone who likes sassy women and strong men who are not afraid to show emotion.

#5 - Acceptance - 5*

This is the story of Chains and Bex. In it, we look at his early life and the friend he left behind before Bex and her family took him in. He still suffers dreadful nightmares and frustration This is definitely a clash between his past and the present where the ghosts of the past have to be tackled in order for him to find the possibility of the future that he wants. Can these two souls find their connection, Chains move on from his past and find acceptance with the woman he loves?

treachery, misery, and brutality. some treachery on the way, more misery than you can imagine any handling well and love that can conquer all. It was well told and the more disturbing parts of his past were sensitively told. I loved the way we saw a more sensitive side of Bex and seeing the sensitive side of Chains made him feel so much more human and real as a character. A great addition to the Chicago Defiance MC Series.

#6 - Balance - 5*

On the one side is a techie and geek Ace, a biker who wears a cut and is a member of Defiance, on the other is Neve, the Oscar-winning actress who just wants to be treated as normal. Their meeting will be an explosive mixture of lust, love, friendship, conflict, deception and slaughter. Can they find the right balance or is death the only conclusion?

Wow - this was an addictive story that had me gripped hoping if Ace and Neve could find happiness together, survive the oncoming bloodbath and keep themselves true to who they are. Well written and very enjoyable the book ends with a great teaser for the next book in the series which I already can't wait to read. If you like MC books this book is definitely the one for you.

#7 - Defiance - 5*

Torque's home is feeling settled with no problems, but as he starts to relax the world around him goes mad and from a source that he is yet to understand. Can he keep his cool and handle this situation like he always does or is that a step too far? With one person close to home that is in hiding and another person from far who is waiting to strike, can he handle the punches coming from all directions and keep the Chicago Defiance family together? This is a story full of deception, bloodshed, heartache, and lies.

OMG - so many punches and surprises coming at them from all directions. I am so impressed with the strength of mind of Torque and the way he managed to pull through to handle everything that was thrown at him, plus find ways to be on top (even when the situation appeared hopeless). If I didn't already love him before, I certainly can love him now after all those things happening to him. Well written, easy to feel and understand.

#8 - Allegance - 5*

Lift is the Sergeant At Arms of the Chicago Defiance MC and feels like the odd man out as he lives a very solitary existence surrounded by life and love involving the other members. Then he meets a woman who is a mystery to him but she instantly rocks his world. Will she accept him when she finds out who he is or will he need to change his for her? Vibe is a club member and he and Hayley are together. She might be a club girl but she is his exclusively. Then something happens to her and their worlds are rocked - totally. This book is all about lies - those we tell ourselves as well as manipulation, deception, abuse and hurtful thoughts/actions. So where are the allegiances going to lie at the end?

OMG - this was just SO good. It started dramatically, got worse, then changed tack and got even more dramatic before the finales for each of the two tacks that were unrelated but equally as dramatic. It was like being in a washing machine, going through one segment of the wash cycle, then emptying and going through the next wash cycle segment. There were times when I was horrified, times I was just angry, times I was thrilled and times I was completely heartbroken and crying (I had to stop and wipe my eyes so that I could see to read!). Throughout were the common themes of love, loyalty, sacrifice and vengeance. Well written, easy to read, feel and understand. Contains some explicit sexual content, violence and sexual violation.

Long Teaser -

Heat enveloped me. I tried to get up but there was something pressed against my side. A moment of panic washed over me until I remembered Gray. His arm was flung loosely over my waist holding me to him while he slept. I sighed contentedly before carefully rolling out from underneath him so as not to disturb him.

Light shone in from a crack in the metal shutters, illuminating the room enough for me to make my way to the lavatory. My eyes drifted to Gray as he grunted and reached out in his sleep. I smiled at the sight already eager to climb back into bed. He really was a sight to look at.

Maybe after the lavatory, we could continue where we left off last night. I took a step and hissed as my foot landed on something hard and poky. I jerked my foot away from it, but the gold glint of a badge caught my eye.

My heart skipped a beat as I stooped down to pick it up. I held it up in the streaks of sunlight filtering in through the drawn curtains. Gray was no freedom fighter. He wasn’t even a bounty hunter. He was something far worse.

He was the royal guard for Prince Kai of the Orion regime. And he knew exactly who I was. I dropped the badge to the floor and stifled a scream. I had to get out of here. I wasn’t going back, I’d die first.

Tears pricked my eyes. A few droplets escaped, cascading down my face until I wiped them away. How could I have been so wrong about him? I thought he was a good man. I thought he was different from everyone else. He was the worst kind of scum alive. He'd used my vulnerability against me. For fucks sake, he was probably planning to turn me in to his prince the moment he arrived. It had all been a ruse to not only get me but the entire crew of the Nightfall. That bastard. I would never make the mistake of trusting him or any man again.

“Aurora?” Gray asked sleepily as he stirred in bed.

I gasped, my heart thundering in my chest I was too late. He was already awake. I grabbed my clothes and started yanking them on.

“What’s wrong?” Gray was out of bed and by my side in an instant. He grasped my forearm lightly. “Aurora?”

My hand whipped upwards connecting with his face before he could stop me. “You’re a member of the royal guard. You lied to me. You used me.” I hated the way my voice trembled with my accusations. Traitorous tears pricked my eyes.

“Aurora, wait.” His other hand reached out to grab my other arm.

I yanked it away and put it on his cheek to cup it. Inhaling I let out a deep breath to center myself. “Let go of my arm.” My pheromones permeated the room as I used my power of compulsion.

Gray’s pupils dilated as he inhaled my scent. His grip loosened and he swallowed. He was fighting me. “Let go.”

He still held my arm. No one had ever resisted me before. How was I not affecting him? “Let go,” I said through clenched teeth.

His fingers trembled before they dropped away from my arm. “I…what are you doing?”

I kept my hand on his cheek and stood on my tip toes to place a chaste kiss to his lips once again pushing my pheromones at him. The moment my lips touched his I felt that spark between us again. I cursed under my breath hating that I still felt something for him when I meant nothing to him. “You used me. Why? Was this all some sort of sick game to you? Were you and Prince Kai going to have a good laugh about my stupidity when he showed up?”

My bottom lip trembled, and tears rolled down my cheeks. I didn’t really want to know the answer to my question. I’d let myself fall for him like an idiot.

“What? No. Aurora.” He went to reach out to me again.

“Don’t move,” I whispered. My emotions must be stopping me from having the effect I wanted. I could control him if I could reign in my own feelings.

“I was going to tell you.”

“Liar,” I hissed through gritted teeth. “You used me.” I grounded myself and pushed another dose of pheromones at him. “Did you know they used to have me use my skills for interrogation too? I’m able to use my pheromones to compel people. I could make you tell me anything. Make you do anything.”

Gray opened his mouth and closed it. His eyes widened slightly.

“Oh, was that not in my file?” I asked darkly as anger surged through me. He’d played me. I opened my mouth to ask him why he’d done it again but couldn’t bring myself to do it. If he said he’d used me for whatever reason it would crush me. How could I have been such a fool?

“Go back to bed, Gray.”

“Aurora,” he said his voice gravely as he tried to fight me.

I gave everything I had into one final push. “Go back to bed.”

He nodded and took a step back. I wasn’t sure how long I would have before my effect wore off. He was unusually strong and good at resisting me.

Dressing quickly, I slipped out of the room and turned on my comm to alert Echo that we needed to leave immediately. I wasn't going to allow my carelessness to get everyone captured and we needed to get out of here before he snapped out of my spell.

Review: A Torrent of Deceit by Sarah M. Cradit 4 of 5 stars

A Torrent of DeceitA Torrent of Deceit by Sarah M. Cradit
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Charlotte is right in the middle of the war between the two families and is in the bosom of the dangerous LaViolette clan under the assumption that she alone can save those who she loves but to do that she has to do it from within with no friends nor allies to help her and with her magic being meaningless among all the other witches. Nicholas' distance from Lauren means that the relationship between her and Ashley can blossom and so while burying his love for Lauren he focuses on helping Charlotte from the outside spending his dyad looking over his shoulder and his nights without sleep. But this desperate plan is very reckless and his old and new life will intersect in irreversible ways. Far too late Charlotte realises that Harlowe LaViolette has always been several steps in front of her. With no word from Charlotte in months, Nicholas has no choice but to take a bold chance and change course which is a move that will come at a vast cost to everyone who they love.

OMG - plots and subplots weaving around each other as they try to forward their aims in the way they think are correct even though it later appears that they made incorrect choices. It will be interesting to see in the next book in this series what happens for both Charlotte and Nicholas after their actions from this book and the changes that happened right at the end. So right now I feel very sorry for Charlotte and just want to shake Nicholas. Well written, and easy to read/understand as long as you keep the plots clear in your head. (I had to read some sections twice just to make absolutely sure I understood it which was not a reflection on the standard of the writing but the complexity of the plots).

Review: The Alien's Future by Ella Maven 3 of 5 stars

The Alien's Future (Drixonian Warrior, #0.5)The Alien's Future by Ella Maven
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Anna is kidnapped from Earth and after the ship crashes on a planet with some blue horned aliens who look like bodybuilders and have lots of piercings. They decide that she and the other females must be their new playthings until one alien Turk possessively protects her and decides that is no way he will share her and instead leaves his clan as he knows he can't fight them all.

This is a novella-length story and it sets off the Drixonian Warrior series and how the women came to the warrior's area. I enjoyed this story although it was a bit short and left me wanting to know more. Thankfully I read this after I had read the first book in the series so it didn't persuade me from reading any more of them. A quick light read with some explicit sexual content.

Review: Axtin by Elin Wyn 4 of 5 stars

Axtin (Conquered World, #2)Axtin by Elin Wyn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Brilliant Chemist Leena's heart is closed behind a wall of ice and her sharp tongue. So the battle happy berserker with a dark past Axtin with his green striped skin would be the last travelling companion she would've ever picked. But there is much more to him as he uses his strong arms to protect her from attackers causing her heart to start to thaw. Axtin only finds peace fighting against the Xathi since they destroyed his homeworld and so fighting them on Ankau just means that he does the same fight somewhere else. But when he is forced to protect Leena from the dangers all around can he learn to care for someone else?

I really enjoyed this story with the shut-off and determined Leena on the one side and the protective Axtin on the other. They definitely butt heads for a while until they found a middle ground and then a compromise to accept each other and their viewpoints. It was great to see them appreciate the other's strengths and be able to help each other. I was so glad to see Leena have some happiness in her life as he was far too uptight at the start of this series. Well written, easy to read and understand. Contains some sexual content.
