Review: Terrors That Tingle by Wesley Thomas 5 of 5 stars

Terrors That Tingle: A collection of short horror storiesTerrors That Tingle: A collection of short horror stories by Wesley Thomas

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A great collection of scary short stories that sometimes make you think "Could that happen?". The writing was very good and at times a joy to read as I felt it was of a higher standard that many other authors. I'm really not into this genre of book but his writing is so good I really enjoy the stories , so give it a try.

The Message - a writer lives in a remote location enjoying the solitude.
Great descriptions to set the scene and a great twist at the end. Loved it.

The Doll Maker - a tale of a gifted doll maker.
Good story, well told, and I loved the ending.

The Stairs - two cousins go on an adventure with surprising results.
Great story, well told with a surprise ending. I'm convinced this is the only story I've ever read that used the word "Discombobulated"

Stage Fright - the tale of a young man and his audition for a part in the play on the stage.
Good story of what happened. Great level of detail describing the scene, thoughts and feelings being experienced.

Dementia - the story of an old lady with dementia.
Great twist in the story at the end that bizarrely made me smile.

Boxed - a visit to a hotel goes spectacularly wrong.
Wow - now that definitely fed into most people's secret fears. Well told and very easy to imagine yourself in their position.

The Bar - Brad is determined to visit an invitation only bar.
Well that definitely wasn't what he (nor I) expected. Story contains bad language if you are sensitive to that.

Revelation - a mother reveals something disturbing from her past to her son.
Didn't see that ending coming.

In the Basement - a young boy discovers something in the basement.
Nice story - almost makes you wish it was true in some ways.

Bloody Baby - a tale of a very disturbed young man.
Wow - it was definitely disturbing.

Intruder Alert - Cassie battles with an intruder in her house with an unexpected end.
Interesting. Quite sad really.

Marnie - Marnie sits at home during a storm and has an intuition something is going to happen.
Lots of suspense in this short mystery.

Waxy Nightmares - a wax museum becomes a mystery.
I enjoyed this one which was quite interesting.

Horror Goggles - Paul is excited to go to a new VR experience in town to try it out with unpredictable consequences.
Good story which can definitely be imagined as real one day.

Helicopter Ride - a helicopter trip up a mountain has an unexpected result.
Wow - I think I'll stay on the ground down here.

Scarecrow, scarecrow - do you find scarecrows frightening? So does Greta.
Formidophobia has never been so real.

Review: A Perfect Man by Cecilia Dominic 3 of 5 stars

A Perfect Man A Perfect Man by Cecilia Dominic
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Karen Hardeman attends Foothills University to study writing but her first assignment in Intro to Romance is a joint one and in it she has to find the perfect hero. Unfortunately her allocated partner for this assignment is overconfident and annoying as hell. Seth Sayers is at the University to escape his family and find a new direction. However he ends up humiliating Karen by rewriting her manuscript from the heroes POV. As the work on the collaboration goes on, Karen starts to trust Seth both with the manuscript and her heart. But Seth needs to resolve the questions around his father's death before he can concentrate on himself let alone anything else.

I liked this story and as a first foray into a romance without any shifters etc it was ok but I did find it a little boring in places. Hopefully his will all be better for her next story like this.

Werewolf Skylar Callahan has taken the step of ignoring her pack and family and instead has been working towards a career as a public advocate for werewolves and harbours political ambitions. However there is currently something dark in her life as a stalker s determined to claim her as his. Wyatt Turner is a hot Alpha who needs everything to be done to his satisfaction. Now his wolf has decided she is his intended mate and that he must protect her at all costs - even though she seems determined to keep him at arms length. Can he get close to her to keep her safe as well as win her over?

Wow - lots of danger, drama and intrigue in this fast moving story. As I would expect from this author, everything was well written, and I could feel and empathise with all thoughts, feelings and emotions. Definitely a great start to the series and a good taste of things to come.

However he soon gets involved with Mina the local veterinarian who is also in trouble. Can they both learn to trust each other?

Can Fenris at her side helping her be enough to get it back from her family - especially when he meets someone dangerous from his past?

Lots of drama, danger and excitement in this continuation of the trilogy. Well written as I would expect from this author, and I could empathise and feel all the emotions involved in this complex tale.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Allie and Revik have set up a camp with their alliance members within a hotel in New York. Then a mystery virus that only kills humans hits San Francisco and at the same time some key loved ones start disappearing. Add to that the fact that the Lao Hu is constantly attacking the alliance and Shadow is still lurking out there life is not simple for both Allie and Revik as they are forced to new find ways to work together effectively. They then find a list of humans that are marked as important in the Displacement so Jon sets to work with Wreg to find them and bring them into the protection of the hotel whilst training them.

WOW. This story was full of twists and turns and if you thought you knew what was going to happen next it quickly changed and so you were completely wrong in your assumptions. There was non-stop action for large sections of the book apart from some breaks more intimate moments that were sensitively done and added to the picture and character of the main people in the story. Everything was very well written and all the events, actions and emotions involved were clear and easy to understand and feel as you read the story. Now I just need JC to write the next book in the story so I can be put out of my misery!

Review: Nadar by Vi Voxley 4 of 5 stars

Nadar Nadar by Vi Voxley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mara James is a Terran Union Fighter Pilot and is as angry as hell - after the humiliation of a failed mission her leadership is set on making enemies of one of the most dangerous warrior races. Her change to make a name for herself comes in the unexpected form of their fiercest warlord - Nadar Brengen - problem is is is also smoking hot!! Nadar is the kind of guy who when he sees something he wants he won't take no for an answer - and he badly wants Mara. Can they both deal with the spark of passion between them, whist handling their respective leaders who seem hell bent on a damaging war between the races. Can they protect an ancient shrine whilst finding ways to change the views of both races that are clouded in historic hearsay?

Wow - this story had lots of danger, romance, passion and even compassion in places. The story was sensitively told and the characters were well described and explored so we knew and understood them. I could feel their hopes, dreams and frustrations as the story built up to the dramatic climax. Promising start to the series.

Zuran: A Paranormal Sci-Fi Alien Romance: Albaterra Mates Book 6 Zuran: A Paranormal Sci-Fi Alien Romance: Albaterra Mates Book 6 by Ashley L. Hunt
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Phoebe is a human nurse based in Ka-lik’et (which is in the Albaterran kingdom of Dhal’at) and is considered as one of the best. When she loses an important patient events quickly spiral into critically important events.

As a nurse, Phoebe has spent her career helping people. She knows it’s her calling and throws herself into tending to her patients heart and soul. In the city of Ka-lik’et, she is considered one of the best attendants amongst those in the human colony. When she loses the most important patient she’s ever had, though, a fuse is ignited that sends her spiralling into a course of events she never could have imagined. Zuran is a reformed criminal and the Interplanetary Affairs Officer for the Albaterran kingdom of Dhal’at. He meets the curvy, intelligent and incredibly compassionate Phoebe and is awestruck by how amazingly good a person she is. When the Novai who have also colonised Albaterra are struck with a unknown disease they are both thrown together in a desperate battle to save the colonists, ensure it does not spread to the other planet's inhabitants. As part of that journey they discover things about each other (and themselves) that had been hidden for a long time. As part of that journey can they saves their world, themselves, and find out that they actually need each other too?

I absolutely LOVED this story. You don't need to have read the earlier books in the series (however you may well find you have to go back and read them all). The story had lots of drama, danger, romance and mystery in this tale of love and how it can creep up on you when you are not expecting nor necessarily looking for it. Everything was well written and I could feel all the thoughts, frustrations and emotions felt by the characters in this story.

Review: Allex by Lisa Lace 5 of 5 stars

Allex Allex by Lisa Lace
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Priya is human and after a bad breakup decides to enrol as a mate for the Auxem but she is rejected thanks to genetics. She leaves the centre but is attacked by muggers so ends up hiding from them in a nearby shuttle intending to leave when it is safe. Unfortunately she actually finds herself on a much larger ship heading for Auxem as a stowaway. She then encounters Allex - a doctor and the fifth son of the king who is hiding from his brothers to get relief from their controlling and overbearing affection. They end up having a deep attraction for each other, and even though Alex knows he cannot her her he is determined to have her as his mate.

Wow - this is a great story that you don't have to read the earlier books in the series in order to enjoy but it does help. There was lots of drama and excitement in the story which contained an impossible to ignore love for each other. I could feel and sympathise with Allex's annoyance at the way his family treated him. The relationships between all of the characters were easy to to pick up and understand and the developing relationship between Priya and Allex was quite enchanting.

Review: Creatures: A Limited Edition Collection by A K Michaels by Monica La Porta

Creatures: A Limited Edition Collection of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance Creatures: A Limited Edition Collection of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance by A K Michaels
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Shade - AK Michaels - 5 of 5 stars

Shade Shawcross is the Alpha of the Silver Lake pack and seems to have a insatiable hunger that is beginning to consume him. His Betas (and best friends) suspect they know what might be happening and persuade him to look through the pack archives to confirm what it is and find out the cure. Shade eventually agrees and they start to go through the recently digitised archives. They are all shocked at what they find and when Shade finally lets his wolf take control to try and find his soulmate. This is not going to be easy as she is on the run from her pack and Shade has three bothers after him after their scheming sister told them a story that was incorrect. Will he find his mate or will either of them die from the others chasing them?

Wow - lots of action and excitement in this Wolf's Hunger story. After a slightly slow start the action just kept coming and the danger kept piling up on them both. Well written as always and all the thoughts, dreams, emotions and frustrations were all easy to feel and experience as you read this story.

The Fifth Moon's Dragon - Monica La Porta - 5 of 5 stars

Dragon Sol (High Lord of Solaria) has returned to marry his brides but ends up having to fight off an assassin. Jade is a member of the Assassin Academy and loves what she does. This mission however becomes dangerous for a whole list of reasons when their roles are reversed and their hearts and lives are both at stake.

I loved this story - drama and action from the very start and continued throughout the story. I defy anyone to read this and not want or need to know the rest of the story between Dragon and Jade.

How to be a Mermaid - Erin Hayes

Tara has dreamed about being a mermaid since forever so takes a year out to wear a fake tail and be one in a professional group of performers. Then she meets a real one called Finn and starts to become a real one. When she tries to find him to stop the transformation she gets caught in the middle of a war between the land and sea - her only escape is to learn to be a real mermaid.

A charming story with a gentle love story mixed in with the being a mermaid transformation and the impending war. Well written, clear and easy to understand. An enjoyable light read.

Soul Stalkers - Norma Hinkins

Cursed Magic - Margo Bond Collins and Rebecca Hamilton

White as Snow - May Sage

Murder by Magic Catherine Vale

Soulless Monica Corwin

The Princess and the Vampire - Thea Atkinson

What Devil's May Come - Rachel McClellan

Changed - Debbie Herbert

Tara's world had recently changed dramatically from it's original course. Before she was a witch who was happy to go along with her coven's focus on world domination, then she was in love with an immortal called Andrew and had finally seen the truth - determined to extricate herself from the world she was in she went to a final coven meeting hoping this was he start of her new future.

Drama in spades in this story that sets the scene for the Appalachian Magic series of books by Debbie. Proof that life (and love) never run smoothly for all races but that it is possible to get a HEA in the end. Well written and emotions clear and easy to empathise with.

Ink - Melanie Karsak

Academia of the Beast - KN Lee

Allyn is a witch who lives if the slums of Eastria having escaped the hunters. Just before the Winter Winds trap everyone in their homes for the season she goes with friends to the Winter Ball and meets the crown prince of Elastria and she has hope for a brighter future until her ex-boyfriend tricks her and she is tuned in for the bounty on her head.

She then finds herself a prisoner in a strange castle that has ghost servants and talking walls. Can she tame the prince's mysterious twin and can she cure the curse?

This was a great retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It was well written, and I could definitely put myself in the position of the characters and relate to their feelings and emotions.

Blue Moon - Morgan J Parker and Nathan Squiers

Origins - Rebecca Hamilton

The regent needs a wife who is a witch who can give him a child to take over protecting the sector from the Ravagers. Problem is he is infertile so keeps banishing his wives to be killed rather than admit he has a problem.

Alec is a Hunter who searches for witches for the regent to marry and is looking for the next person. Adira is a witch that that Alec finds but cannot bear to hand her in immediately so gives her 13 days to prepare for the tests she will have as the regent's chosen bride. Alec helps to train her in combat in preparation for handing her in. Will he have the strength to hand her in or will they both give in to the pull between them?

I loved this book and the twists and turns in the story. A couple of times I became quite teary eyed so could definitely sense the emotion in those sections. Definitely recommended.

Review: The Harker Trilogy: Books 1-3 by Erin Hayes 5 of 5 stars

The Harker Trilogy: Books 1-3: Damned if I Do, Damned if I Don't, Damned Either Way The Harker Trilogy: Books 1-3: Damned if I Do, Damned if I Don't, Damned Either Way by Erin Hayes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Damned if I do
Evie grew up in a family that hunted supernaturals but she wasn't directly involved so she didn't believe in a lot of things - however when her and her sister are attacked by Vampires it means her sister is killed and Evie has been infected. Now she has to take over from her sister while she herself is dying. She is determined to find the vampire who killed her sister with the help of a vampire with amnesia called Jude. Can she do everything she needs to do before she runs out of time?

I LOVED this story. It had the right mix of drama, mystery and romance. Just when it felt that everything was going to be there was a twist in the story and everything changed.

Damned if I don't
Evie seems to have messed up the chance to not only cure vampirism but also herself. Add to that her cousin Carl is no longer talking to her, her sister's killer Anthony is still at large and Jude has confessed that he loves her. Scarily he might be a vampire but Evie is in love with him too - problem is as Jude rediscovers his past there is a risk that both Evie and Jude will be torn apart. Add to that the little problem of having to find a new Progenitor while the old one is in hiding and life is just peachy.

Wow - so much drama and excitement even if it is tinged with a large dose of sadness. There was so much happening here and the story was developing at a fast pace - I found myself reading it faster and faster as I was caught up with the story. OMG - I have to wait for the next book to be written now.

Damned either way
The vampire Antony who killed my sister and her husband is currently in control of everything and I have nothing in comparison. I can't find my niece Amelia, Jude has run away to surrender the the hunger that is taking control of all the vampires across the world, and I'm no longer the Harker so can't fix any of it. Can I find the courage to take the one last chance I have left to save us all?

Oh WOW. This is the last book in the Harker Trilogy and has everything looking hopeless before building up slowly to pull the threads together into a dramatic finale that then leaves you feeling both relieved and heartbroken. Thank goodness for the Epilogue is all I can say about that!! I loved the story which was well written and everything was clear and easy to understand. I could feel all the emotions involved and was really routing for them to succeed in the story.

Touching Infinity Touching Infinity by Erin Hayes
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

In this future the galaxy is ruled by greedy corporations who only care about their profits. Clementine Jones is slightly more robot that human and is first mate of the Pícara - a space pirate ship that makes a living working only for themselves doing the dangerous job of stealing corporate information for the highest bidder. However when she accidentally downloads a dangerous virus the crew is in extreme danger.

I loved this story. It had a great mixture a science fiction theme and a romance all given a slightly dark tinge. I really liked the characters and can't wait to read the next book in this series so I can find out what happens next.

Alien Enemy Alien Enemy by Ashley L. Hunt
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Candice falls for Luke who is a performer with the Circus Of Cursed Souls - however she then learns that he is an alien from Corin and his real name is Arias. He is under a bizarre curse where if he experiences extreme sadness he is pushed to Earth, if he experiences extreme joy he is pushed to Corin.

This was a strange situation which meant they jumped to different worlds and therefore the story was a bit disjointed. However the characters felt very real and the emotions were easy to feel as you read the story.

Holt: A Wolf's Hunger Alpha Shifter Romance Holt: A Wolf's Hunger Alpha Shifter Romance by Desiree A. Cox
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Barry “Holt” Scofield is an Omega in the Loca Nuna pack and he and his friend Dolph escape from a trap made by a group of wildlife preservationists. The sounds of his father (the pack Alpha) and the others being dragged away will haunt him forever. He knows what he needs to do now - work with Dolph and free his father and the rest of the pack. However before he can start on that he is struck down with the Hunger and so he can only think of eating before his wolf makes clear to him that he has to go find his mate - even though this is NOT the most convenient time. Can he free the pack and find his mate at the same time?

I really enjoyed reading this story. It had plenty of drama, excitement, the occasional twist and turn, but did reach a satisfactory conclusion in the end. I liked the addition of some different characters that were not shifters or shifters that I didn't find stuck in the stereotypical shifter behaviour. A very enjoyable story well written and easy to feel the emotions involved.

Forsaken by Magic Forsaken by Magic by Jasmine Walt
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Lord Polar ar’Tollis has wealth, power, women throwing themselves at him - just about everything he could ever want. However as a mage he has been taught to rein in his emotions and that he is superior to other lives - humans or shifters. However when he receives an execution order for a child everything is called into question especially when he discovers corruption in his own organisation. How he enters the world of a catch-22 when he has to chose between killing an innocent child or saving her and potentially losing everything.

Loved this story!!! It was great to follow his realisation that there was corruption and that if it wasn't challenged an innocent child would die. The solution he came up with was inspired even if the final solution was a bit left field. The emotions, thoughts and emotions were very clear and I could feel all of them. This is a great introduction to The Baine Chronicles as well as an addition to any who already love the series.

Review: The Marriage Paradox by Noelle Greene 5 of 5 stars

The Marriage Paradox The Marriage Paradox by Noelle Greene
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Olivia Munro is currently a legal attache but is also working hard to get her father released from a detention centre. However after she throws caution to the wind and has a fling with a guy called Ian her career seems to be destroyed. She then has to go on a road trip to try and save her father which involves a marriage of convenience to Australian Markus who is on the same road trip even though he had previously deceived her. Markus is suffering with a premonition that he will die at some time in the near future which affects some of his decisions but he is also very loyal and Olivia is soon captivated by him. Love is an unexpected surprise for them both. They end up caught between an authoritarian ruling regime and corruption in a casino. Can they play everything right or will they end up dead and ripped apart?

This story was a little slow to build up as it was laying out the story but eventually became a dramatic story with lots of twists, turns, surprises and passion. I loved the surprises in the story which hit you in such a way that there was no way you expected them. It was a story of love, passion and how love really can conquer all if you give it a chance no matter what is going on around you. Definitely worth sticking with it through the slow start.
