Review: The Holiday Exchange by Riley Hart by Christina Lee 3 of 5 stars

The Holiday Exchange

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Dawson has a quiet crush on Briar, the charming regular at his café. But just as he’s about to make a move, Briar shows up dating Dawson’s twin brother, Nathan. Three months later—right before Christmas—Nathan dumps Briar, leaving him heartbroken and without a date for his family holiday in Maine. In a twist worthy of a rom-com, Briar asks Dawson to pose as his boyfriend for the trip. What starts as a friendly favour quickly rekindles the spark Dawson always felt. As they navigate festive small-town charm, nosy relatives, and lingering feelings, Dawson must decide if he’s brave enough to confess the truth: he’s been falling for Briar all along. Now the question is—can a fake holiday romance turn into something real?

I enjoyed this novella which was a seasonal fake date story with the twin brother feeding into the confusion. I did find it a bit hard to get past the thought of the fact that Briar had had sex with both twins and how he resisted comparing their performance. The setting was very Hallmark Christmas Movie like which was nice. Easy to read and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

Review: Pretty Wild by Riley Hart by Christina Lee 5 of 5 stars

Pretty Wild (Boys in Makeup #3)

Pretty Wild by Riley Hart by Christina Lee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Clark is twenty-four, has a responsible job and an apartment and just needs to find the right guy to settle down with. Then he reconnects with childhood friend Skylar who was his first real friend (and first crush) who after a twelve-year gap is just as gorgeous and free-spirited as he was before. he can feel sucked back in but knows he can't fall for him as he is looking for forever and he focuses on casual. Skylar is the good-time guy who loves hookups, shaking his booty at the club and having fun. He has seen too many broken hearts and doesn't want to have one. Having Clark back in his life makes him feel grounded while his glasses make him an adorably hot Cark Kent. Hooking up with him is a bad idea but resisting him is impossible and so each touch, kiss or night spent together makes Skylar crave more. Clark makes Skylar want to break his rules as his best friend has stolen his heart even though he was afraid to give it. It comes down to Skylar potentially hurting Clark, or losing the only guy he's ever really wanted. Pretty wild, right?

I loved this emotional story which really looks at being brave enough to love someone and whether the reward is worth the risk. I loved the family politics involved and so was thrilled when Clark finally told his mother how he really felt. This was a lovely story and they definitely deserved to get a HEA together so that they could start to make up for the time they were kept apart. A great story to end the series on. Easy to read, feel and understand. This is an MM story with mature content.

Review: Pretty Sweet by Riley Hart by Christina Lee 5 of 5 stars

Pretty Sweet (Boys in Makeup, #2)

Pretty Sweet by Riley Hart by Christina Lee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Seth hoped that moving to Portland would be a fresh start for him so he could live for himself but instead, he lives in an apartment his Mum chose, drives a car she chose and majors in Finance just like she wanted. Bad memories stop him from hooking up with anyone and has no idea how he could find a guy who would get him and his need to help and feel safe anyway. After befriending a worker at the assisted living facility he volunteers at she invites him to dinner and realises that her son Jakw is a guy he met last fall. He's hot and sweet and they are both attracted to each other even though Jake has never been with a man and Seth is a virgin so they set the pace together. Jake had a rocky childhood as his father was abusive and so as soon as he graduated high school he got them both out and is now managing a garage he owns with his best friend while living in his own home. Seth and Jake fulfil each other's needs and they have complete trust together which is priceless. Can they strike the right balance?

I really enjoyed this story which was heartbreaking on both sides - Seth had a dead father, a mother driven to succeed and near sexual abuse followed by bullying while Jake had an abusive father and a need to protect his mother. I thought their relationship was beautiful and that their trust and ability to confide in each other were very special. There were definitely a couple of moments in this story when I cried and so I was completely invested in the success of their relationship. Easy to read, feel and understand. This is an MM story with mature content.

Review: Pretty Perfect by Riley Hart by Christina Lee 4 of 5 stars

Pretty Perfect (Boys in Makeup, #1)

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Jesse started off trapped in a small town where he could not be himself because a make-ip-wearing boy who liked boys was not acceptable. He left and was loud, proud and unapologetically himself while following his dreams. He lives in an apartment with his best friend, studies so eventually he can do his dream job and dances the nights away at the hottest gay bar in Portland. Sexy bartender Dane is the only fly in the ointment as he has a perma-scowl made at Jesse and the tension between them i such that clubgoers notice. Every Friday night their bos makes the two of them dance on the bar together and Jesse does things just to wind Dane up. Dane was badly burned by his last boyfriend but thankfully his sister Bree and his niece Hailey make his days brighter while he gets back on his feet including his job as a bartender. No way does he want to get reeled in by another charming, pretty face and get hurt again. But he wants to push Jesse against a wall and screw the boldness out of him, but Jesse can also be pretty sweet (especially with Hailey) as he moves from enemies to angry hookups to friends and something uncharted.

I enjoyed this story with two strong but damaged men who had an undeniable attraction that meant that over time their relationship morphed into friendship and then love. I thought the relationship between Dane and Hailey was special and the way that was expanded to include Jesse (who was great with her) was also special. There were some emotional moments near the end of this book. I loved the please for love and acceptance even if it went against religion. Easy to read, feel and understand. This is an MM story with mature content.

Review: Space Merchant's Jewel by Lynnea Lee 3 of 5 stars

Space Merchant's Jewel (Tallean Mercenaries #9)

Space Merchant's Jewel by Lynnea Lee
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Jakkan lives a double life - the Dominion think he is a merchant who sells luxuries, but to the outer planets, he provides information to help them to thwart Dominion attacks. Then on Reka 5, he meets human Jillian and as his mate, he needs to claim her without blowing his cover as someone suspects him. Jillian likes to treat herself to Earth-made trinkets from Jakkan's stall which is located next to her's in the market. The more time she spends with him the more she realises that he is hiding a dangerous secret that might make him her enemy.

I enjoyed this novella with the dramatic way that Jakkan and Jillian met and managed to connect together. I enjoyed his use of disguises and the way that he was clever to utilise every skill he had in order to save Jillian while keeping his identity and purpose secret. Easy to read and understand, Contains some mature content.

Review: Alien and the Wedding Planner by Lizzie Lynn Lee 3 of 5 stars

Alien and the Wedding PlannerAlien and the Wedding Planner by Lizzie Lynn Lee
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Wedding Planner Alana Watson couldn't wait for this year's wedding season to be over. When what appears to be a potential new client in the form of two gorgeous men enters her shop for a consultation she assumes they are a couple but their weird questions tell her otherwise, so when one of them kidnaps her to take her back to his home planet it is a complete shock. As a renown scientist on his home planet of Crimea, Lord Ice Silverkiller has travelled to Earth to find out how to stop his planet from dying out due to a total lack of procreation. He only wanted some answers but after meeting Alana, science is the farthest thing in his mind. Ice is even-tempered and very logical and so finds it hard to reconcile the crazy urge he has to possess curvy Alana. He is also experiencing the urge to make love to her, protect her and keep her safe - could this be love? This could be the key to saving his dying race.

This was a light read that was a little bizarre but quite enjoyable. I would have liked more detail around the problems on Crimea but it was covered enough for me to understand what I was reading. I liked the dynamic between Ice and Alana who made a really sweet couple. Well written and easy to understand. Contains some sexual content.

Review: The Line Between by Tosca Lee 5 of 5 stars

The Line Between The Line Between by Tosca Lee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wynter Roth, her mother and sister are members of doomsday cult New Earth but she is turned out into a world on the brink of madness thanks to a mysterious nationwide outbreak of early onset dementia. Wynter struggles to adapt to the world that she was always told as evil until her sister arrives one night with some medical samples that are the key to understanding the current disease sweeping the nation. As the power grid fails and the nation descends into chaos Wynter needs to find a way to get the samples to a lab in Colorado when she meets former military man Chase Miller who has his own reasons for wanting to get close to her and the samples. Can she get through and will they be able to avoid all the bad people who are looking for her?

This story was definitely a thriller that had action all the way through. I loved the way it described in what I feel was accurate detail, life in a cult and how people can react when they finally escape. Wynter was a very interesting character and I loved the way she met Chase and their mutual distrust and then growing trust over time. I loved the way the story ended and there was an awesome amount of research to make this story as close to real life as it could be (and so it was far easier to imagine it was real). Well written and very enjoyable it was very easy to understand and feel the thoughts and emotions of the characters in this story.

Touched by Magic: An Epic Fantasy Adventure Touched by Magic: An Epic Fantasy Adventure by K.N. Lee by
Nicole Zoltack

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

There has been a war between Humans and elves for many years but it all comes to a head when an unknown sorceress begins to attack and take over elven territory. The elves try to find a way to even the odds between them and find her hidden daughter in the general common populace. Nala is the daughter of a farmer and his wife until their village is attacked by elves and she is captured. She then starts on a journey of survival, magic and love - the last one with the most unlikely of places as it is with the enemy. Can she be safe anywhere and find a place where she can be happy?

Lots of drama from the start in this story of one girl's journey through life and the various complications and opportunities that it throws at her. There are plenty of surprises on the way as well as a number of complications. A good start to the series and it gives a promise of some great story-lines in the future. Well written and easy to understand and feel. You will definitely feel a lot of sympathy for Nala and the sheer quality and quantity of changes and complications presented to her.

War of the Dragons: Book Four of the Dragon-Born Saga War of the Dragons: Book Four of the Dragon-Born Saga by K.N. Lee

Rowen keeps dreaming of end of the world and she knows she needs to find a way to stop that from happening. This is even more imperative now she is the the queen of Withrae so is responsible for the family who are living in the palace. Can the scribe who worked for her father help her to stop the war between humans and dragons and stop it from happening?

This was a well written story that had a lots happening but it was a little slow in places. Hopefully it has done a lot of the work to set up the next book which will hopefully have a lot more drama and excitement. Well written and everything was clear and easy to understand. I'm looking forward to the next instalment now.

Please note this is the 4th book in the series and you need to have read the others first.

Review: Dragon-Born: The Dragon-Born Saga Books 1-3 by K.N. Lee

Dragon-Born: The Dragon-Born Saga Books 1-3, Half-Blood Dragon, Magic-Born Dragon, Queen of the Dragons Dragon-Born: The Dragon-Born Saga Books 1-3, Half-Blood Dragon, Magic-Born Dragon, Queen of th by K.N. Lee
e DragonsMy rating: 5 of 5 stars

Half-Blood Dragon:
Rowen is a lady in waiting and trying to execute her stepfather's plan for her to marry the crown prince and improve the family's status. However she keeps having dreams that warn her that she is going to die in an unpleasant way. Then the dreams come true as she is framed and sentenced to death for the murder of the very prince she was going to marry. She has nowhere to run as the power is all in the hands of the full blood dragon shifters. Can the stranger save Rowen from execution and can she work with her gift and find the courage to set the world on fire?

I loved this story. I can imagine politics in a royal household being like she encountered and I definitely felt for her as the story unfolded and she was forced into situations through no fault of her own. The story was well written and I could definitely feel the emotions for the characters involved in the story.

Magic-Born Dragon:
Rowen is a fugitive and must avoid being captured by the Dragons by hiding in the human realm. All she has is a treasure map to find the Red Dragon and her two powers of persuasion and prophecy. She finds help from a new friend and has to hide from a pirate who is concentrating on vengeance. Then a man from her past warns her and questions this whole journey.

Wow - the plot definitely thickened in this book. I LOVED the story and the way it developed. It was very well told and the writing was easy to understand but also meant that I felt all the complex thoughts and emotions involved in the story. The ending was just WOW!!! I can't wait to find out what happens next in this complex story. You have got to read this.

Queen of the Dragons:
Rowen is a half-blood dragon who was taken by the Red Dragon and seems to have lost her memory. But she finds out some ancient secrets and her memory after a strange black dragon tries to free her (and gets injured in the process). Now they are both captives while he recovers. Elian Westin is a Captain and he and the remnants of his crew are travelling to Withrae where a war between dragons and humans is brewing - and it's not clear which side they will choose when he meets the woman who broke his heart years ago and suddenly the fate of both her and his daughter are at stake.

There was lots of action in the story as a the threads of the story were woven together to come to some fairly explosive conclusions. There were lots of surprises and twists and turns on the way. The story was well written and easy to understand. A very enjoyable read that transported me off to a land of dragons, magicians and humans.

The Scarlett Legacy: Woodland Creek The Scarlett Legacy: Woodland Creek by K.N. Lee
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

College student Evie Scarlett is a wizard and only wants two things – to marry Parker Drake and leave Woodland Creek and get away from her family who drive her crazy. However it all falls over when dangerous crime boss Hugh Prince is murdered while awaiting trial for the murder of Evie's father and so Evie's family become the prime suspects. Avalon (Hugh's youngest son) arrives and throws the feud between their two families into chaos when a choice is given – either her eldest brother dies or they give Evie to him. Evie suddenly has to find a way to protect her family and win back her freedom which is then complicated when she finds a new power she had no idea she had and finds herself attracted to the very man who has bartered for her.

A pleasant novella that ties quite well into the Woodland Creek world. Well written but would have benefited from more detail and being a longer book.

Problem is she has to cope with her nemesis Alice who has stolen her boyfriend, friends, etc - pretty much everything. Could life be any more miserable and how can she last 4 years like this? So she decides to stop being the perfect Princess and take Alice's attacks no more.

Great story. There was lots of danger and drama with plenty of twists (especially the large one at the end!). The writing was good and I could feel all the thoughts, emotions and fears being experienced by Beth in the story. It was definitely a great start to the series and promises something great going forward. I wonder if there is a magic potion so I can get the author to write faster?

Review: Blood Princess: The Chronicles of Koa BookThree by K.N. Lee 4 of 5 stars

Blood Princess: The Chronicles of Koa Book Three Blood Princess: The Chronicles of Koa Book Three by K.N. Lee
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In this third book the lines have been drawn between the vampires in both worlds as Lera builds an army and tries to seize the Lyrinian throne. At the same time Koa and the rest of those trying to avoid the war have to survive angels, demons and even worse - Death. Koa is also confused when she is described as the Blood Princess by some of the characters yet she has no idea what this means!

Lots of drama and action in this episode in the story of Koa. There were a lot of elements that you needed to keep on top of in order to understand the significance of the events and their connections. We still never understand what the Blood Princess is but hopefully that will become clear in the next instalment. The writing standard was good I just felt it needed to fill in more about what the Blood Princess actually is.

You needed to have read the previous books in the series first.

Review: Poison and Potions: a Limited Edition Collection by Erin Hayes by Debbie Herbert by K.N. Lee by Rebecca Hamilton

Poison and Potions: a Limited Edition Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy CollectionPoison and Potions: a Limited Edition Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Collection by Erin Hayes

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

How to be a Mermaid - Erin Hayes

Tara has dreamed about being a mermaid since forever so takes a year out to wear a fake tail and be one in a professional group of performers. Then she meets a real one called Finn and starts to become a real one. When she tries to find him to stop the transformation she gets caught in the middle of a war between the land and sea - her only escape is to learn to be a real mermaid.

A charming story with a gentle love story mixed in with the being a mermaid transformation and the impending war. Well written, clear and easy to understand. An enjoyable light read.

Soul Stalkers - Norma Hinkins

Cursed Magic - Margo Bond Collins and Rebecca Hamilton

White as Snow - May Sage

Murder by Magic Catherine Vale

Soulless Monica Corwin

The Princess and the Vampire - Thea Atkinson

What Devil's May Come - Rachel McClellan

Changed - Debbie Herbert

Tara's world had recently changed dramatically from it's original course. Before she was a witch who was happy to go along with her coven's focus on world domination, then she was in love with an immortal called Andrew and had finally seen the truth - determined to extricate herself from the world she was in she went to a final coven meeting hoping this was he start of her new future.

Drama in spades in this story that sets the scene for the Appalachian Magic series of books by Debbie. Proof that life (and love) never run smoothly for all races but that it is possible to get a HEA in the end. Well written and emotions clear and easy to empathise with.

Ink - Melanie Karsak

Academia of the Beast - KN Lee

Allyn is a witch who lives if the slums of Eastria having escaped the hunters. Just before the Winter Winds trap everyone in their homes for the season she goes with friends to the Winter Ball and meets the crown prince of Elastria and she has hope for a brighter future until her ex-boyfriend tricks her and she is tuned in for the bounty on her head.

She then finds herself a prisoner in a strange castle that has ghost servants and talking walls. Can she tame the prince's mysterious twin and can she cure the curse?

This was a great retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It was well written, and I could definitely put myself in the position of the characters and relate to their feelings and emotions.

Blue Moon - Morgan J Parker and Nathan Squiers

Origins - Rebecca Hamilton

The regent needs a wife who is a witch who can give him a child to take over protecting the sector from the Ravagers. Problem is he is infertile so keeps banishing his wives to be killed rather than admit he has a problem.

Alec is a Hunter who searches for witches for the regent to marry and is looking for the next person. Adira is a witch that that Alec finds but cannot bear to hand her in immediately so gives her 13 days to prepare for the tests she will have as the regent's chosen bride. Alec helps to train her in combat in preparation for handing her in. Will he have the strength to hand her in or will they both give in to the pull between them?

I loved this book and the twists and turns in the story. A couple of times I became quite teary eyed so could definitely sense the emotion in those sections. Definitely recommended.

Phantoms of Dusk Phantoms of Dusk by K.N. Lee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Elora Snow is an orphan and is hoping Westerly University is the fresh start she needs. She meets Ripley as shifter and her only friend and ally. This is very welcome as everything goes south as she finds she unexpectedly has magical powers and is destined to become a member of secret organisation called the Phantoms of Dusk. Could this be the family she has always yearned for? However people on campus start dying and evil creatures start stalking her so the world suddenly gets more dangerous and complicated for her. Can Elora face the truth of her past and she and Ripley keep on with their relationship when the normal is that witches and shifters are not supposed to get along.

Wow - what a great start to this series. It was able to fill in all the right details and set the scene without detracting from the story nor does it make the book slow and boring (like some first books in a series do). Everything was well written, clear and easy to understand. I am already addicted and want to know what happens next.

Preeti and Vineet are twins are the Goddess of War and the God of Peace, and are currently imprisoned in the Vault, where the Goddess of Law has put them in order for her to rule the world. They manage to escape and find themselves jumping to another world called the Abyss (the human world). It's not the cold barren place they imagined it to be and in the three years they have to hide there the realise how much they like it and the people there who they have become friends with. However the Goddess of Law is determined to do anything and everything (including tearing the human world apart) to either imprison or kill them so she can replace them as the rulers of the gods.

Wow - what a roller-coaster of a ride with these two young adults with the weight of the world on their shoulders. It had everything - love, romance, action (both from gods and men fighting) and plot twists and turns as the events were happening and situations were changing. The writing of this story was great and the events, thoughts, hopes and emotions of the characters were well told and completely understandable. Now I just need to know what happens next and will the characters meet again (I really hope so).
