My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Detective Alec MacAidan thinks he’s used to strange, until a dying man gives him a warning and turns to dust. The incident draws Cronin, a thousand‑year‑old vampire Elder who’s spent centuries waiting for his fated mate — a man “with a shield,” now revealed to be Alec and his police badge. As the two struggle with their sudden bond, news erupts of a powerful vampire in Egypt preparing to unleash Death itself. Thrown into a world of ancient magic and hidden history, Alec learns that everything he knew about pharaohs and gods was wrong — and that he may be the key to stopping a catastrophe.
The pull between Alec and Cronin is immediate and impossible to ignore, and watching that connection deepen was one of my favourite parts of the story. The mysteries and magic surrounding them — from ancient secrets to impossible powers — kept me completely hooked. I was flying through chapters, desperate to know what happened next. I especially loved how Cronin gave Alec the space and time he needed to adjust to the idea of being bonded to a vampire. That patience made their relationship feel grounded and earned. And the supporting cast? Utterly addictive. Every side character added humour, tension, or heart in a way that made the world feel alive. This was one of those stories that’s incredibly easy to read, feel, and understand — the kind you sink into without even noticing how quickly the pages are turning. This was an MM story with mature content.
