My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Everest Hale signs up for a government “ritual” after portals from Erethar open — but instead of war, the beings who arrive need something very specific from humans to survive. What should’ve been a simple arrangement becomes far more when Everest is paired with Rathyn of the Dark Vale. As their bond deepens, Everest realises the government isn’t telling the whole truth, and their fates are becoming tightly intertwined. In the end, it’s no longer just about saving Rathyn — it’s about what they mean to each other, and Everest doing his part to “save the world” with great enthusiasm.
I came away from this book feeling unsure how to take it. There were definitely emotions and feelings woven throughout, but I struggled with Everest — his constant arguing and heavy slang made it hard for me to connect with him. On the other hand, I absolutely loved Cielo, and I’m genuinely looking forward to his story. Overall, the whole thing felt bizarre in tone and execution, even though there were moments that stood out. This was an MM story with mature content.
