What If... by Dale Mayer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
With a reputation for solving weird homicide cases, detective Abigail Cartwright is stumped when she is called to a lecture hall in the local university. During a lecture on the bizarre subject "What If..." given by soon to be retired, Professor Gertrude Milligan, two female students have died without any signs as to why or even how. Then Abby finds some old old cases which might connect. Professor Leon Wellington is concerned about his aunt Gertie. They have a shared personal history filled with tragedy and so to have her two favourite students die in front of her leaves her shocked and grieving. Then she goes missing. As the past collides with the present the killer starts to realise how close he is to losing everything. Can Abby solve this case before anyone else dies?
I loved this story which has a great mixture of murder mystery, psychic phenomenon and romance. I loved the way that the relationship between Abby and Leon developed and the steps that she had to go through in order to solve the case. I loved the twist at the end and how it wasn't so obvious who it was. I loved the drama and danger at times as well as the very forthright way that Abby has which definitely made her far more human (although I do wonder how that would work in real-life). Easy to read and understand. Contains some sexual content.
