My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Fergus Galloway heads to the remote mining town of Pannalego in Western Australia for a research trip, determined to escape Sydney and his old life. Unprepared for the harsh climate, eccentric locals, and the wild humour of the community, he’s even less prepared for Davo—a rugged miner with a big heart, a strong sense of belonging, and a surprising love for soft fabrics. What begins as a temporary field trip becomes a turning point. In a place many dismiss as uninhabitable, Fergus discovers laughter, connection, and a love that makes him reconsider where—and with whom—he truly belongs.
I enjoyed this sweet novella with a warm, transformative narrative that blends themes of escape, belonging, and unexpected love against the backdrop of the Australian outback. I loved how Davo’s rugged miner persona contrasted with his love of soft fabrics, challenged stereotypes of masculinity. This explored how strength and tenderness coexist, and how embracing softness—whether literal or emotional—can be an act of authenticity. I also loved how the story celebrated reinvention, resilience, and the discovery of love and belonging in the most unlikely of places. This was an MM story with mature content.
