Review: Deacon's Law by R.J. Scott 4 of 5 stars

Deacon's Law

Deacon's Law by R.J. Scott
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Deacon Shepherd, a former undercover cop, sacrificed his career and his relationship to protect Rafael “Rafe” Ramirez, walking away to keep him safe. For three years, Deacon lived in the shadows, believing their love was lost forever. But when Rafe survives a brutal hit-and-run, the man he thought betrayed him suddenly reappears at his bedside. Rafe, once forced into witness protection after dismantling his uncle’s cartel, is now a target again—and his only chance of survival lies with the man who broke his heart. As assassins close in and old enemies resurface, Deacon and Rafe must confront their painful past while fighting for their future. Bound by a love that refuses to die, Deacon knows this time he can’t walk away—he must fight to the end, even if it costs him everything.

I loved this story which was a high-stakes romance layered with themes of betrayal, redemption, and survival. I loved that Deacon’s decision to walk away from Rafe to protect him embodied the theme of sacrifice—giving up love, career, and identity for someone else’s safety. Yet from Rafe’s perspective, that sacrifice looked like betrayal. The tension between intention and perception highlighted how love can be both protective and devastating. I also loved that despite betrayal, danger, and bloodshed, Deacon and Rafe’s love refused to die. A lot of deep feelings and emotions in this powerful story. This was an MM story with mature content.
