Vidal, a recently dethroned prince, is grieving the loss of his country while living under the watchful eye of Major Beauchamp, the military attaché assigned to keep him safe and out of the spotlight. In his London flat, Vidal finds distraction with Connor, the stylish pawnbroker downstairs, while Beauchamp becomes his constant — and very forbidden — companion. Between forced proximity, quiet pining, and an unexpected love triangle, Vidal’s life becomes a slow‑burn tangle of duty, longing, and complicated feelings.
I struggled with this story, mostly because Vidal’s over‑the‑top personality and his dynamic with Connor—while also clearly needing Beauchamp—felt odd and hard to connect with. The love‑triangle tension never quite settled into something satisfying for me. The writing style and format were also distracting at times, making it harder to stay immersed in the story. Still, the emotional undercurrents and the complicated relationships had their moments, even if the overall reading experience didn’t fully work for me. This was an MM story with mature content.
