I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

Edward Bailey was heartbroken after a scheming woman called Ivy broke his heart. He how lives a very regimented life of scientific principles with structure and predictability. Iris McTavish's father is a world-renowned Archaeologist and she has been assisting him for years when he dies - she needs to find a way to gain some kind of income so when an invitation to a University meeting is delivered for him Iris attends as his assistant while he is indisposed - all she has to do is keep his death a secret to avoid certain ruin.

At the meeting it becomes clear that Iris and Edward are to join a small group of acquaintances on a Grand Tour in Europe to search for an element that will help harness the power of aether. As the 2 more scientific of the party Edward and Iris become closer as the travel to Paris and then Rome. Can Edward keep a handle on his anxiety and can Iris keep her father's death a secret?

This was a lovely story about a journey to find knowledge across borders with danger, intrigue and just a little bit of romance. It was nice to gain some appreciation of how it was in that time for women with the need to wear gloves, have a chaperone, and keeping one reputation intact.
