My Best Friend Is Broken

My Best Friend Is Broken by Jessica Jackman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Nicky’s life shattered the night his best friend Liam went to prison for a tragic accident that claimed a young girl’s life. Once the golden boy of their neighbourhood, Liam vanished behind bars—cutting off all contact, leaving Nicky to rise alone in a world that now feared and respected him. Five years later, Nicky waits at the prison gates, expecting a hardened man. Instead, he finds Liam broken—fragile, haunted, and clinging to the only person who still feels like home. Their reunion is raw and intimate, steeped in loyalty, grief, and a love that defies easy labels. When Liam begs Nicky to claim him—to make him his—it’s not just about comfort. It’s about survival. But for Nicky, the choice isn’t simple. Giving Liam what he needs might mean confronting his own buried feelings, his own fears, and the possibility that love could be the most dangerous thing of all.

I loved this dark story which asked can someone who’s been broken by their past ever be whole again? And can love be the bridge between shame and healing? The bond between the two men transcended time, trauma, and societal judgment. It explored how loyalty can be both a lifeline and a burden—especially when it’s tested by emotional complexity and unspoken desire. The story also story explored how trauma can reshape intimacy, and how desire can become a form of emotional survival. It asked whether love born from pain can still be real—and whether it can heal. I loved how both men were strong in their own way. So many emotions and feelings were worked into the story and the love that they both shared was strong enough to withstand everything thrown at them. Easy to read and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.
